Travel Safety
While Central America can occasionally experience periods of unrest, we remain vigilant and follow official guidance at all times. Please be assured that your safety is our top priority. We continuously monitor the Australian Government’s travel advice on www.Smartraveller.gov.au for all destinations and work closely with our trusted local partners to ensure your safety at all times. If any situation arises that may impact your travel plans, we’ll be in touch with updates and next steps.
Mosquito borne illness
Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue fever, and in some areas malaria and Zika virus, have been reported across parts of Central America and Mexico. Taking simple precautions can greatly reduce your risk.
We recommend packing an effective insect repellent (containing DEET or picaridin), wearing long sleeves and long pants in the early morning and evening, and using repellent and/or clothing as an added layer of protection when sightseeing. Where possible, keep doors and windows closed, particularly at dusk and overnight.
Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here: https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information
You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.
We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

Getting Around
While touring Central America, you will be travelling by private coaches, boat services, and flights. Central America is a very large region, and to see all that it has to offer then there will be some long travel journeys on the coach. Roads, especially out of the capital cities, can be very bumpy, and there can often be unexpected delays due to traffic, but rest assured there will be comfort stops along the way where you can freshen up, stretch your legs, use the bathroom and often, purchase refreshments. Generally, lunch stops will be taken at rest stops as they can easily accommodate our groups.
Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Accommodation Details
This tour features a curated selection of 3-star and 4-star hotels and jungle lodges, all with private ensuite facilities throughout. Each accommodation has been carefully chosen based on a stringent set of criteria, ensuring the high standards of comfort and convenience. Accommodation in Central America can differ from what you might be used to at home, but rest assured, we carefully select options to ensure your stay is both comfortable and enjoyable. Some hotels will not provide things like hairdryers, kettles or sink plugs in the rooms.
Packing Essentials
We recommend you pack as lightly as possible, ensuring that you can carry and lift your luggage, and walk with it for short distances or up or down a flight of stairs.
A small lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for this tour. This tour includes internal flights, which have luggage weight restrictions, and it is recommended that you keep your main luggage weight no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option.
Climate
Central America and Mexico are largely tropical, with warm days year-round and a distinct dry and wet season. While you may travel during the “rainy season,” this often means short, heavy showers (usually in the afternoon) rather than constant rain.
Panama: Dry season typically runs from mid-December to mid-April, with warmer, more humid conditions from mid-April to December. Temperatures in the lowlands are hot year-round (often around 30–32°C). The Caribbean side can see rain in any month.
Costa Rica: Expect a tropical climate. The drier months are usually December to April, with the wetter season generally May to November. Higher-elevation areas can feel noticeably cooler, especially at night.
Nicaragua: Warm and tropical in most regions, with average temperatures around 27°C. The dry season usually falls between December and May, while the wetter months tend to run from May/June to November. Mountain areas are cooler than the coastal lowlands.
Honduras: Conditions vary by region. The highlands are more temperate (cooler evenings), while the coasts are hotter and more humid. The wetter season commonly starts around May/June and can extend through September/October. The Caribbean hurricane season runs roughly September to November.
El Salvador (Suchitoto): El Salvador is warm year-round, with a dry season typically from November to April and a wetter season from May to October. In colonial highland towns like Suchitoto, evenings can be a little cooler, but days remain warm and sunny outside the wettest months.
Guatemala: The rainy season usually runs from May/June to September/October, often as brief showers rather than all-day rain. Highland areas such as Antigua and Lake Atitlán can be cool at night—bring a light jacket, particularly in December and January. The hottest months are often April to May (just before the rains).
Belize: Belize has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The drier season typically runs from around December to April, while the wetter months are generally May to November, often with short, heavy showers. As a Caribbean destination, Belize can be affected by hurricane season from June to November, with the highest risk usually late August to October.
Mexico (Playa del Carmen): The Riviera Maya is hot and humid most of the year. The drier, more comfortable period is generally December to April. From May to October, expect higher humidity with afternoon showers and the chance of tropical systems. Hurricane season is typically June to November, with the highest risk often late August to October.
Currency and ATMs
Central America and Mexico use a mix of local currencies and (in some places) US dollars, so it’s worth carrying a combination of cash and cards. ATMs are generally the easiest way to access money, but machines can be unreliable in smaller towns, always travel with a backup card and some emergency cash.
Panama
Currency: Panamanian Balboa (PAB), pegged to the US Dollar. US dollar notes/coins are widely used and prices are often shown in USD.
ATMs & payments: ATMs are common in cities and larger towns and usually charge a fee. Some banks may limit withdrawals. Bring smaller USD notes where possible, as $50/$100 can be difficult to use. Don’t rely on one card - carry a backup and some cash.
Costa Rica
Currency: Costa Rican Colón (CRC).
ATMs & payments: ATMs are generally the easiest way to access cash in tourist areas, but machines can occasionally be out of service - carry a backup option. Visa is commonly accepted, though card payments may fail due to connection issues and a surcharge may apply in some places. It’s a good idea to withdraw what you need in San José, where access is easiest. Spend or exchange leftover colones before leaving Costa Rica, as they can be hard to use elsewhere.
Nicaragua
Currency: Nicaraguan Córdoba (NIO).
ATMs & payments: US dollars are widely accepted, but you’ll still want local currency for day-to-day purchases, especially in smaller towns. ATMs are available, though reliability can vary, so avoid relying on cards only. If withdrawing USD, do not accept notes that are torn or marked.
El Salvador
Currency: US Dollar (USD) is the main currency in use.
ATMs & payments: ATMs are available in cities and tourist towns, and cards are accepted in many hotels and larger restaurants. For markets, small eateries and local shops, cash is still best - carry small USD notes for easier change. As always, have a backup card and some cash in case an ATM is out of service.
Honduras
Currency: Honduran Lempira (HNL).
ATMs & payments: US dollars may be accepted in some places, but you’ll need lempiras for most purchases (and it’s often better value to pay in local currency). ATMs exist in many towns but can be frequently out of order—carry backup cash/cards. Visa is most widely accepted where cards are taken, though connections can be inconsistent and surcharges may apply. Copán Ruinas is typically the most convenient place to exchange enough for your time in Honduras. Spend or exchange leftover lempiras before leaving.
Guatemala
Currency: Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ).
ATMs & payments: US dollars are commonly accepted, but it’s recommended to carry quetzals, especially small notes for everyday spending. You can exchange money at banks or casas de cambio (often faster with longer hours). ATMs are available in many areas, but fees apply and machines can be unreliable, don’t rely on one card. Important: Guatemala may refuse damaged USD notes, even if slightly marked - carry clean, undamaged bills. Spend or exchange leftover quetzals before leaving Guatemala.
Belize
Currency: Belize Dollar (BZD). US dollars are widely accepted in many tourist areas, but change is often given in Belize dollars.
ATMs & payments: ATMs are available in larger towns and tourist centres, but may be limited in smaller areas, carry backup cash. Cards are accepted at many hotels and larger restaurants, though smaller businesses may be cash-only. It’s helpful to have a mix of small USD notes and local currency for day-to-day spending.
Mexico
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN).
ATMs & payments: ATMs are widely available, especially in tourist centres like Playa del Carmen, and cards are accepted at most hotels and many restaurants. For taxis, small shops, markets and tips, you’ll want pesos in small denominations. In some tourist areas you may be offered prices in USD, but you’ll usually get a better deal paying in pesos. Keep a backup payment method and avoid relying on a single card/ATM.
Food and Allergies
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you'll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of local cuisines. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat.
If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour.
Panama: Don’t miss a bowl of sancocho (a comforting chicken soup) and try fresh ceviche in Panama City’s seafood markets.
Costa Rica: Start the day like a local with gallo pinto (rice and beans, often served at breakfast) and look out for a classic casado plate for an easy, filling lunch.
Nicaragua: In Granada, try vigorón (cassava topped with cabbage slaw and pork crackling) and keep an eye out for nacatamales (a hearty tamal-style dish).
El Salvador: A must-try is pupusas - stuffed corn cakes typically served with curtido (a tangy cabbage slaw).
Honduras: In and around Copán, popular favourites include baleadas (a soft tortilla folded with fillings like beans/cheese) and sopa de caracol (conch soup) in coastal regions.
Guatemala: Warm up with pepían (a rich stew often considered a national favourite) and try kak’ik, a traditional Mayan turkey soup, especially in the highlands.
Belize: Look out for Belizean classics like rice and beans served with stewed chicken, and fresh seafood dishes along the coast. If you spot them, conch fritters and fry jacks (a popular breakfast treat) are also local favourites.
Mexico: In Quintana Roo, local Yucatán flavours shine - try cochinita pibil (achiote-roasted pork), and snack on panuchos or salbutes (topped tortillas). In Playa del Carmen, you’ll also find excellent street-style tacos and regional bites.
You should be wary of drinking the local tap water.
Local Customs
Central America is warm, welcoming and relaxed, and you’ll generally find that a little courtesy goes a long way. A friendly “Buenos días / Buenas tardes” when entering shops, restaurants or meeting locals is appreciated, and it’s worth being mindful that social norms can feel more conservative outside major tourist areas.
When visiting churches, cathedrals and religious sites, dress modestly (shoulders covered; avoid very short shorts/skirts), and keep noise to a minimum. If you’d like to take photos of people (especially in smaller towns and markets), it’s polite to ask first, in some areas this is particularly important.
Dress Code
Across Panama, Central America and Mexico, dress is generally casual and practical, with a few easy adjustments depending on climate and the places you visit. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for warm, humid days, while cooler highland areas can feel chilly in the evenings. While Panama, Central America and Mexico are generally relaxed and casual, it’s still a good idea to dress modestly in local towns and when visiting churches or religious sites, particularly outside major tourist areas. As a guide, aim to keep shoulders and knees covered when entering cathedrals, churches and other sacred places. Women may prefer to avoid very short shorts/skirts or low-cut tops in these settings, and men should also avoid sleeveless tops and very short shorts.
At some religious sites you may be asked to cover up, and occasionally a wrap or covering may be available. However, it’s often more comfortable to bring your own light scarf or cover-up, which is also handy for sun protection and cooler evenings in the highlands.
Responsible Dining
When dining across Panama, Central America and Mexico, it’s worth keeping ethical and sustainable choices in mind. Where possible, choose locally owned cafés and family-run restaurants, and try dishes made with seasonal, locally grown produce (tropical fruits, beans, corn and fresh vegetables are staples across the region). This supports local communities and can reduce the environmental impact of your meals.
In coastal areas (including Panama and Mexico’s Caribbean coast), consider choosing responsibly sourced seafood and avoiding options that may be linked to overfishing. If you have animal welfare concerns, you’ll usually find plenty of satisfying plant-forward meals built around beans, rice, tortillas, vegetables and tropical produce.
You can also travel a little lighter by reducing single-use plastics—carry a reusable water bottle where practical, say no to plastic straws and cutlery, and avoid purchasing souvenirs made from wildlife products (such as coral, shells or items made from protected species). By making small, informed choices, you can enjoy the region’s flavours while helping to care for the places and communities you’re visiting.
Tipping
A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. Throughout Central America tips are normally welcomed and expected. Local guides often rely on their tip as a significant proportion of their income. We recommend approximately $3USD (or local equivalent) per person per day for each of the guides and drivers.
Most service industry workers will expect a tip of some kind and so it is useful to have spare change for hotel porters, taxi drivers and the like. It is common to leave 10 - 12% in restaurants.
If you would like to show your appreciation to your tour leader, who you may feel has exceeded your expectations, a discretionary gratuity would be gratefully received. As a guideline we recommend an amount of between US$4-6 per person, per day (or the equivalent in the local currency).
Peak Travel Times
Central America and the Mexican Caribbean are most popular during the dry season, when days are sunnier and humidity is lower. This period generally runs from November/December through April, and it also lines up with major holiday travel, especially around Christmas/New Year and Easter (Semana Santa).
Panama: Peak travel time is typically mid-December to April, with the driest weather from January to mid-April.
Costa Rica: The busiest period is generally December to April (dry season/high season).
Nicaragua: Peak travel time is usually November to April (dry season), with Christmas/New Year and Easter being especially busy.
El Salvador: The most popular time to visit is typically November to April (dry season), with a noticeable increase in local tourism around Christmas/New Year and Easter.
Honduras: Peak season generally falls in the dry months from December to April (often strongest around February–April).
Guatemala: The main peak period is November to March (dry season), with an additional busier window often noted around July/August.
Belize: Peak season is generally December to April (dry season), with the busiest time often around Christmas/New Year and Easter, particularly in coastal and cayes destinations.
Mexico (Bacalar & Playa del Carmen): The Riviera Maya’s peak season is typically December to April (drier, more comfortable), with Christmas/New Year and Spring Break/Easter often being the busiest times.
Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your tour.
Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you'll have some free time to explore on your own. While your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.
Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
While Panama, Central America and Mexico are rewarding to explore, it’s important to take sensible precautions. Keep valuables secure, stay aware in crowded areas (markets, transport hubs), and avoid demonstrations or large gatherings. Plan to travel with others after dark where possible, and use reputable, pre-arranged transport rather than hailing informal taxis on the street.
Panama: Petty crime is common in busy areas. Stick to well-known neighbourhoods, use ATMs in banks/shopping centres.
Costa Rica: As with many destinations, opportunistic theft can occur—be mindful in cities and popular tourist spots, and keep personal items close.
Nicaragua: Stay aware in public places and at night, and avoid isolated areas. Your guide can advise on areas to avoid in each destination.
El Salvador: Security has improved in recent years, but it’s still wise to be cautious with valuables and remain alert in busy areas, particularly in the evenings.
Honduras: Take extra care with personal belongings in crowded areas and tourist centres, and follow local guidance from your tour leader.
Guatemala: Avoid demonstrations if they occur, and use common-sense precautions in markets and busy public areas. Your tour leader will advise on any local conditions during your trip.
Belize: Belize is generally relaxed, but petty theft can occur in tourist areas. Keep valuables secure, particularly in busy town centres and around popular attractions.
Mexico (Bacalar & Playa del Carmen): Tourist areas are generally well serviced, but petty theft can occur—keep valuables secure, especially at beaches, markets and nightlife areas.
Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi.
We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential trip information with you.
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our trips. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-trip cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.
Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.
Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.
Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations
We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.
Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.
Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping trips, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.
Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your trip.
Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Travelling in a Group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
Coach Transportation
The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.
While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries, we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.
Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance in doing so. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure. Purchasing a local SIM may be possible as a final option.
We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential trip information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
This is a land only package.
This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination. The function works like most general flight search engines allowing you to select your preferred airline, book different cabin classes (eg. Business class) and view flight durations and transit times to your destination.
The flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub once the following criteria has been met:
Visit our Flight Hub for more information on terms and conditions, amending your flights and information on luggage allowances.
