Itinerary

Today begins the adventure of a lifetime as you depart for Morocco.

Hotel
Hotel Barcelo Casablanca or Similar

Welcome to Morocco! Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Modelled after the French city of Marseille, Casablanca is the commercial hub of Morocco. This busy port city is famous for its art deco buildings and the modern-day masterpiece, the Hassan II Mosque. It took more than seven years to build – it’s the second largest mosque in the world and open to the public for guided tours.

Check-in at the hotel begins after midday, and there will be a welcome meeting with your tour leader this evening.

Meals
Breakfast

This morning, enjoy an orientation walking tour of Casablanca with your tour leader.

The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore. A pleasant way to spend the day in Casablanca is to wander the old medina and the city walls, then jump in a taxi to visit the Quartiers Habous, the new medina. A medina is the historic heart of a city. Shops, restaurants, markets and homes line the twisting and turning streets.

The old medina is brimming with history, with narrow alleyways and remnants of old city walls and forts. It’s still a bustling hub of activity, with much of this area a busy bazaar where you can shop for leather goods, oils, linens and spices. Stop at a cafe and watch the locals go about their day.

Finish the day with a walk along the beachfront Corniche, watching the locals play football on the beach, or take it easy with a glass of sweet mint tea in one of the many great cafes.

Optional Tour - Guided visit of Hassan II mosque

Enjoy a guided tour of Africa's largest mosque, which can hold over 100,000 worshippers at one time. Completed in 1993, it's dramatic setting on the ocean provides a striking backdrop to the bustling city of Casablanca.

Breakfast

Today we’ll head to the historical town of Rabat. Rabat’s history is long, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates and more recently the Moroccan parliament. It contains numerous fine Arab monuments, some dating from the 10th to 15th century Almohad and Marinid dynasties, and others that are far older.

Continue to the coastal town of Tangier, Europe’s gateway to Africa. Being just a short boat ride from Spain, it boasts an interesting mix of African and European influences. When you arrive in Tangier, the rest of the day is yours.

Its medina, a star attraction, is everything you’d expect – lively, with the typical narrow, labyrinthe-like alleyways of shops, teahouses and homes. A great place to people watch is the Grand Socco, a large square at the main entrance of the medina and a popular meeting place.

You might visit the ancient kasbah, located high on a hill with pretty ocean views. The old Sultan’s palace (built in the 17th century) lies within these high walls. The Kasbah Museum is a great place to learn about Morocco’s tumultuous, complicated history.

Breakfast

After breakfast we’ll travel to Chefchaouen, or the blue city, the centre of a mountainous agricultural region. On arrival, enjoy an orientation walking tour with your leader. Set against a wide valley and nestled between two peaks in the stunning Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen may take you by surprise. It’s picture perfect, with striking blue and whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and artistic doorways.

Its small but authentic medina has been lovingly cared for and the walled fortress of the kasbah provides a haven in the heart of the city. Wander the tranquil gardens and enjoy the views over the valley from the tower.

After an optional lunch, we’ll continue to Meknes, the sixth largest city in the kingdom and former capital of Morocco.

Optional Tour - Home-cooked dinner with a Moroccan family

Tonight, visit a local family who will serve up some authentic Moroccan dishes for you to sample. In between bites of delicious food and sips of Moroccan tea, you’ll learn more about Moroccan hospitality and culture.

Optional Tour - Moroccan Hammam Experience

A traditional bathhouse, the hammam is an ancient and integral part of Moroccan life. At the heart of Marrakech medina, enjoy a rejuvenating moment at a Moroccan riad dedicated to relaxation. Enjoy a private hammam beldi, or 'traditional bath', which includes a Moroccan black soap exfoliation treatment.

Breakfast

After breakfast, join your local guide to discover the charming streets of Meknes’ medina – the old walled section of the city.

We’ll continue to the ruins of Volubilis. Volubilis was once a provincial Roman capital, the southernmost settlement, and the remains make an undeniably impressive sight. Volubilis is the foremost Roman site in Morocco and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It’s exceptionally well preserved and most of the city is still unexcavated.

Upon arrival, meet your local guide for a tour of Volubilis. After imagining Volubilis as the bustling city it once was, we’ll continue onto the living museum of Fes, your home for the next two nights.

Often referred to as the country’s cultural capital, or the spiritual heart of Morocco, Fes was once one of the world’s great centres of education and culture, both Islamic and Jewish.

Breakfast

This morning, your local guide will take you on a tour of the old medina of Fes. Walk in the narrow maze-like streets of the city passing artisans at work, vendors selling leather and oils, and locals gathering to eat, shop and pray. The winding paths – no cars allowed, instead you’ll see donkeys – seem to go on forever in this 540-acre medina.

Explore the old city, stop by Fes’ famous tanneries and pass by the oldest university of the world, founded by a Moroccan Muslim woman, Fatima al-Fihria.

The rest of the day is free time.

Breakfast, Dinner

We’ll leave the intensity of the city behind for the simplicity of the scenic high Atlas Mountains to Erfoud, a city known as the desert gate given its location on the edge of the Sahara. It’s approximately a seven hour drive south, inland through a variety of spectacular scenery – fertile valleys, cedar and pine forests and barren, rocky landscapes and flat desert.

En route we’ll stop at Ifrane, the Switzerland of Morocco, located at an altitude of 5460 feet above sea level in the Middle Atlas region. It’s green and fresh, boasting beautiful landscapes, lakes and streams.

We’ll continue to Midelt, a market town originally built as a base for mining in the area. It’s the perfect spot to break up the journey to the Sahara. Surrounded by natural wonders, like imposing Mount Ayachi looming over the town, it’s a refreshing place to take a breath and relax.

We’ll stay the night in Erfoud.

After breakfast we’ll head for beautiful Todra Gorge, a massive trench that rises over 250 metres to form one of the most dramatic and spectacular natural sights in Morocco.

Enjoy lunch before continuing to Ouarzazate, where productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Sheltering Sky and Black Hawk Down were filmed. This charming village, once an old military enclave, is now home to two movie studios.

Optional Tour - Atlas Movie Studios

Spend the day like a movie star on the world's largest film set. Over the years, Ouarzazate has served as a shooting location for Alexander the Great, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, The Mummy (1999), Star Wars (1977), The Living Daylights (1987), Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997), and many others, including Ridley Scott’s epic Gladiator (2000). Many of the film sets remain scattered around the desert today.

Meals
Breakfast

After breakfast we’ll travel to the ancient ksar of Ait Benhaddou – you may recognise this from Game of Thrones. Centuries ago, this was an important stop for caravans carrying salt across the Sahara. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains as a striking example of southern Morocco architecture. Enjoy the earthen clay architecture on your walking tour of the kasbah, before the drive out to Marrakech.

An ancient, exotic city wrapped in European modernity, Marrakech is a feast for the senses. Be enticed by the alluring scents and brilliant colours of the spice markets, the sounds of the musicians, the rich folds of carpets, delectable foods, acrobats and perfumed gardens. Marrakech won’t disappoint – it’s eclectic, beautiful and a modern fusion of Moroccan and international culture.

When we arrive, the rest of the day is yours. You may like to visit famous Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square of Marrakech in the heart of the medina. It’s big and frantic, with scores of people shopping, eating, getting henna tattoos and watching snake charmers. Packed with locals and tourists alike, it’s certainly memorable.

Optional Tour - A Taste of Marrakech tour

Wander through the souks of Marrakesh sampling olives, dried fruits, nuts, and pastries on this foodie tour of the bustling city.

Meals
Breakfast

After breakfast, your local guide will take you on a morning tour of the old medina, through the bustling souks that are the lifeblood flowing through the city. This is the trading centre of the city and the sights, sounds and fragrant smells are almost overwhelming. The walls surrounding the medina, made of a distinct orange-red clay and chalk, were built in the 12th century.

Stop by the Koutoubia Mosque; its famous minaret is the prototype for others of its kind around the world, including La Giralda in Seville. The mosque is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Then walk back through the streets of the old medina to the Jemaa el-Fnaa.

The rest of the day is free to explore further or shop in the bazaar. No doubt you’ve already enjoyed many Moroccan delicacies, like aromatic tajines, couscous and the street food favourite pastilla. Moroccan food is as exciting as you’d imagine – spicy, full-flavoured and often boasting a mix of contrasting textures and flavours. You’ll find street vendors and waiters at restaurants all eager – almost too eager – to win your custom. Make like a local and sip sweet mint tea at a cafe as you watch the world go by.

Optional Tour - Cooking class at La Maison Arabe

Learn the art of making chicken tagine and baking fresh Moroccan bread under the expert guidance of a dada (traditional Moroccan cook) on this half-day workshop. You'll use modern equipment found in everyday kitchens at the beautifully decorated La Maison Arabe, and dine on the meal you've prepared at the end.

Starts: approx: 3pm
Duration: approx: 3 hours

Breakfast

This morning we’ll travel the Atlantic coast to the old fishing town of Essaouira, a city where the medina brushes up against the Atlantic Ocean.

A popular beach destination for tourists, it’s still retained its relaxed atmosphere and is the perfect place for you to catch your breath after the frenetic pace of Marrakech. The name means ‘little picture’ in Arabic and you’ll see why – sandstone walkways contrast with whitewashed houses, bright blue sky and the sand of the surrounding beaches and dunes.

On arrival, the rest of the day is free. You might like to visit the fish market, where you can enjoy today’s catch freshly cooked for you. Wander the harbour and watch the fishermen at work on the traditional blue wooden boats.

Fitness Requirements
While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers. As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

This particular tour is categorised as a “3”:

3 – Moderate Tour:
A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Tipping
A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. While tipping is not customary, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many destinations.

The following tipping amounts are based on local considerations and feedback from our past travellers. Please don't tip with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes. This is regarded culturally as an insult.

Restaurants: At local markets and basic restaurants we suggest leaving the loose change. At more up-market restaurants tipping 5% to 10% of your bill is recommended.

Local guides: Throughout your trip you may at times have a local guide in addition to your leader. We suggest MAD20-30 (AUD$3-5) per person per day for local guides.

Drivers: You may have a range of private drivers on your trip. Some may be with you for a short journey while others may be with you for several days. We would suggest a higher tip for those more involved with the group however MAD10 per person per day is generally appropriate.

Over the years we have found that many of our travellers find the need for tipping to be both tiresome and embarrassing, especially if they don't have the correct small change. To overcome this, we have established a tipping kitty system. At your group meeting at the commencement of your tour, your tour leader may discuss the idea of running a group tipping kitty, whereby everybody contributes an equal amount and then your tour leader pays the tips while keeping a running record of all monies spent (except restaurant tips). The record can be checked at any time and any money remaining at the end of the tour returned to group members. We suggest budgeting around MAD20-30 (AUD $3-5) per person.

You may also consider tipping your tour leader for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline EUR2-4 (AUD$3-6) per person, per day can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Accommodation
The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences, however, any changes are beyond our control.

Single Supplement
Single supplement is $799 per person in addition to the twin share price.
