If you book pre and/or post-tour accommodation on your arrangement, and the tour includes transfers, note that these will be forfeited. The transfers are only provided in line with the tour dates and pre and/or post-tour accommodation purchased through Inspiring Vacations when available.
Bedding Configuration
Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences, but we can not guarantee your request will be available at all properties.
Single travellers
When booking this tour, solo travellers will be presented with two options:
1 - Single Supplement
By paying an additional $3,900.00 per person, in addition to the twin-share price, you guarantee the privacy of your room throughout the entire tour.
Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this tour, your room will generally consist of a double or semi-double bed. Occasionally there may be a hotel that will provide a single bedded room for single travellers.
Note: Yurt accommodation is shared on a twin basis (2 people per yurt). Single occupancy is not available on days 17 and 35; solo travellers will share with another traveller of the same gender.
2- Shared Room with a known friend
If travelling together with a friend, you can opt to share your room with them and avoid paying a single supplement.
You and your friend can create a unique booking each. Creating a unique booking, gives each of you the flexibility of making different travel arrangements (such as adding extra accommodation, flights, etc), making separate payments and having individual access to our Traveller Hub
During the purchase path, you will need to provide your friend’s booking ID (if known) or at a minimum, your friend’s full name.
3- Shared Room with a fellow traveller
On this tour you can opt to share a room with a fellow traveller of the same gender – as specified in your passport – and avoid paying a single supplement.
If you believe you may prevent your travelling companion from enjoying a peaceful night’s rest, please refrain from selecting this option.
You will meet your rooming companion at the beginning of your tour.
Should you wish to change from a shared room to a solo room, this would be at the cost of the traveller who has requested to change the room type. Changes to room configuration during the tour must be organised by travellers directly with the hotel, subject to availability and additional charges.
This option is not available on additional accommodation booked before or after.

Starting Point
Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation, which will be provided approximately 14–30 days before departure, for your confirmed hotel list.
If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.
Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 2pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in; however, this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.
Note: If you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.
Arrival Details
Airport transfers are not included as part of your package. However, we trust that your journey from the airport to the hotel will be comfortable and hassle-free.
As an added service, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub. These must be booked at least 70 days prior to departure.
To make your own way to your hotel from the airport, it is recommended to use taxis booked from an official taxi booking desk at the airport, or alternatively you can use ride share apps such as Uber.
If you're having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.
Please note that if you are choosing to book an independent airport transfer service, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise, nor can they resolve any concerns that you may have with your transfer service.
Optional Airport Transfers - Transfer Portal
Depending on the package purchased, you may have the option to add airport transfers to your booking and you can do so through your Traveller Hub account. We partner with an online marketplace where travellers can compare and select the transfer of their choice.
Inspiring Vacations acts as an agent on behalf of our transfer service partner and any service is delivered by the provider. Inspiring Vacations cannot be held liable for any loss resulting from the transfer service provided. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure any transfer booked meets the requirements of any other travel arrangements. Likewise, your tour leader or any of our on-ground representatives cannot be held responsible for the service of your transfer nor are they in a position to assist with amending your reservation. Any transfer booking is separate from any other booking with Inspiring Vacations, regardless of whether purchased with regards to the same travel journey.
When you make your transfer service booking, you will receive a confirmation email and this will include your meeting instructions, as well as direct contact details. Please ensure you print and bring this with you as you will need to ensure you can make direct contact with your transfer service provider.
Welcome Meeting Instructions
You are welcome to arrive at any time on Day 1 of your tour in Ulaanbaatar, and the day is at your leisure. During check-in you may receive a welcome letter with details of the welcome meeting.
On the morning of Day 2, the tour group’s welcome meeting will take place in the hotel lobby at 8:00am, where you will meet your tour guide and fellow travellers for a briefing before setting off on your city tour. Please ensure that you are on time.
In Case of Emergency
Although we strive to deliver exceptional holiday experiences, unforeseen circumstances can occasionally arise during travel. If any issues arise during your tour, it is essential to promptly communicate them to your tour leader or local representative so they can take immediate action to address the problem and minimise any negative impact on the remainder of your journey.
If your tour leader or local representative is unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction, please request that the matter be escalated to their direct manager for further assistance.
When your final tour documentation is released, this will include an emergency contact for our local travel partner while you are on tour. If this is not included in your documentation, you will receive this information on arrival during your welcome meeting.
Finishing Point
Your finishing hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14–30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list.
Please be aware that due to local regulations in Turkmenistan, all post-tour arrangements, including accommodation and transfers, must be booked through our local partner, as travellers cannot travel unescorted. Arranging your own accommodation is prohibited; you must have all arrangements booked with Inspiring Vacations to avoid denied entry.
Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.
Departure Details
Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are departing as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your own arrangements.
Where the service remains included, your tour leader will confirm the pick-up time from your hotel to the airport and this will depend on the flight that you have booked. Generally, you will be required to be at the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled departure.
If Inspiring Vacations has not provided your international airfares, please ensure you provide your flight details via your Traveller Hub portal no later than 90 days prior to travel so that your transfers can be confirmed.
If you’re having any problems, you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Obtaining a visa for Turkmenistan requires a mandatory Letter of Invitation (LOI), and we are here to assist you with this specific part of the process. Crucially, access to the Letter of Invitation form will be provided within your dedicated Traveller Hub account immediately after your booking is confirmed.
Once logged into your Traveller Hub, you will find a detailed Letter of Invitation form. It is absolutely essential that you carefully read and provide a complete response to every single question within this form. To help you provide the necessary information accurately, we have included guidance notes within the form explaining what each question is asking for. Providing incomplete or inaccurate information will inevitably lead to significant delays in the processing of your Letter of Invitation.
Please be aware that our assistance is strictly limited to facilitating the Letter of Invitation. Ensuring you meet all other Turkmenistan entry requirements, including but not limited to passport validity, any other potential visa requirements based on your nationality, and adhering to all customs and immigration regulations, remains your sole responsibility. You must ensure your passport is valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended stay in Turkmenistan and research any other visa obligations that may apply to you.
To allow sufficient time for the complex and time-consuming Letter of Invitation process, we require you to upload the following documents and complete the online form within your Traveler Hub no later than 90 days prior to your scheduled departure date:
Passport Photo Requirements:
If you usually wear hearing aids, you can wear them in your passport photo.
Some time after booking, you will receive an email from Inspiring Vacations requesting copies of your passport and a passport photo.
Failure to provide all required information in the correct format and by the specified deadline (90 days prior to departure) will likely result in delays to your Letter of Invitation and documentation, and will involve a $250AUD per person late fee.
Due to unpredictable turnaround times for the Letters of Invitation, you may receive this within 7 days of departure. We will work hard to ensure you receive this as soon as possible before your departure, however, the timelines are sometimes beyond our control given that these are issued locally. Your letter of invitation will be issued within your Traveller Hub and you will be notified once it is available. You must print a copy of your Letter of Invitation to present to immigration officials upon arrival at the Shavat Land Border
Upon arrival at the Turkmenistan side of the Shavat Land Border, you will present your Letter of Invitation, and your Turkmenistan tourist visa will be issued. Please ensure you have sufficient US Dollars in cash to pay for the visa fee, which is approximately USD 100-120 per person. Additionally, a payment for a mandatory Covid 19 (RAT) )test upon arrival (or potentially pre-departure, depending on current regulations) is required, costing approximately USD 42 per person.
Please note: only good condition USD cash is accepted (USD notes must be new, issued after 2009, must be clean, crisp, undamaged) to pay for your PCR test and visa.
Visa policies and entry requirements can change. It is your ongoing responsibility to monitor the latest information from the official government sources of Turkmenistan and to regularly check our visa information page for any updates:
https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information
By proceeding with your booking, you acknowledge your understanding of these visa and entry requirements and your responsibility to comply with them.
Please Note: Failure to provide all required information in the correct format and by the specified deadline (90 days prior to departure) will likely result in delays to your Letter of Invitation and documentation, and will involve a $250AUD per person or equivalent late fee.
What to Expect While Navigating Immigration at Shavat Land Border Crossing
To ensure we provide you with the most accurate and helpful information, we have set out the arrival process based on firsthand knowledge. This allows us to set the right expectations and help you navigate your entry into Turkmenistan smoothly. Please be aware that the process can sometimes take between 1.5 to 2 h hours, so we kindly ask for your patience.
Here's a breakdown of what you can expect at The Shavat Land Border Crossing (Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan) comprising three sections.
Uzbekistan post (building) and gate:
Upon arrival at the border you will proceed off the bus and walk with your tour leader to the first border check point where your passports will be checked, bags x-rayed and exit stamps provided for Uzbekistan. After you have cleared customs you will walk to the Uzbekistan Border exit gate, show your passport and proceed to the neutral zone.
Neutral Zone:
The neutral zone extends for approximately 1.5 kilometers between the two posts on a tarmac. You will wait at the shuttle pick up point that is easily located after entering the neutral zone and you will likely see other travelers waiting.
A non air conditioned minis bus (approximately 15 – 20 passengers) will transit you between the posts. Due to the limited availability of shuttle transport, there may be delays in transferring through the neutral zone. Once on the shuttle bus this will take approximately 10 minutes
Turkmenistan post (building) and gate:
Upon arrival at the Turkmenistan border post your passports will be checked once again and you will be directed inside the customs building for passport and visa control, customs procedures and your luggage check.
COVID-19 (RAT) test & Turkmenistan Visa obtaining process :
COVID-19 (RAT) Testing: Once you enter the border building you will be taken for a COVID-19 (RAT) test. Before your nasal swab, you will be asked to verbally provide your name and date of birth for registration. There is no additional documentation required at this stage, and you will not receive any paperwork related to the test. While the on-arrival COVID test may appear unnecessary or primarily a money-making exercise, it remains a mandatory government requirement and must still be completed.
Visa obtaining process & Immigration : Once your COVID-19 test is taken, your tour leader will collect all of the group's passports and take them to the counter where the receipts for the Visa and Covid test payment will be issued. Your tour leader will call you one by one to pay the fees and process your passport with a visa sticker.
Once you have your visa sticker you will proceed to the Immigration counter to get your entry stamp. Passport and visa processing requires access to an electronic database and you may experience delays in the event of a power outage. An air-conditioned waiting area is available, although seating may be limited. We ask for your patience as all visas for the group are processesd.
Customs process: After getting your passport stamped, proceed to customs where your bags will be scanned and checked for prohibited items (they may ask you to open your bags to be checked). After clearing customs you will exit to the border gate, board the bus waiting and continue on your trip.
Please Note: At the Shavat Land Border Crossing smoking is prohibited and there are no facilities to purchase drinks (including water) or snacks. The toilet facilities are basic and are not Western style so please be prepared before arrival. There are no currency exchanges available and you can only pay in USD notes cash.
Important Note: This process can change at any time without advance notice. We endeavor to keep this information as up to date as possible.
As mentioned, the entire process can take between 1.5 to 2 hours. We appreciate your understanding and patience as the local authorities complete these necessary procedures. Your tour leader will be with you and ready to assist you through the process at the land border crossing.
Border crossings can be slow, especially when travelling in a group, so patience is important. Visa processing and formalities may take over an hour, and pro
Tour Suitability
Border Crossings
Crossing borders between the countries of Central Asia is a unique experience. While we strive to provide accurate information regarding border procedures, the process on the ground can sometimes be fluid and may differ from what you might expect. Occasionally there may be variations in fees or procedures that are not always communicated in advance or consistently applied. During border crossings there will be a period when you are unescorted, as your local guide will not be crossing borders with you. Our tour guides will give you as much guidance as possible and stay with the group for as long as they can.
If you feel unsure, are asked for unexpected fees, or have any concerns during a border crossing, please do not hesitate to speak with your tour leader if possible. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we explore this incredible part of the world together.
Medications
It is each traveller’s responsibility to confirm what medications they can legally carry into every country on this itinerary. Across the Five Stans, substances including tramadol, morphine, opiates and similar narcotics are prohibited and classified as illegal narcotics. Some medications available over-the-counter or by prescription at home, such as sleeping pills, may also be illegal or restricted. Penalties can include arrest or detention.
Before you travel, check your government’s travel advisory along with the relevant embassy or consulate for each country on your itinerary. Carry a copy of all prescriptions and a letter from your doctor, and be prepared to declare any prescription medication at customs.
Child Policy
Children must be 5 years old or above and share a room with parents at all times. Children are charged the same price as adults.
Pace
This tour category is Lively.
Our lively tours are faster paced typically including full sightseeing days, some early starts, longer driving days and a number of 1 night hotel stays - perfect for those eager to maximise each moment and cover more ground.
Activity and Mobility
This tour is categorised as: 4 out of 5 - Active
Our Active tours involve regular, longer periods of movement and are best suited to travellers with good fitness and mobility. Expect sustained walking on varied terrain including cobblestones, gravel and uneven ground, with noticeable inclines and occasional light hikes.
Activity snapshot
Mobility requirements
Mobility: Best suited to travellers comfortable with moderate, stop-start walking, long days on foot, steps and some uneven terrain, and getting in and out of 4WD-style vehicles.
Walking surfaces: Cobblestones, stone pavements, dirt and gravel paths, loose rock, soft sand and unpaved roads.
More demanding sites: Khongor Sand Dunes with soft sand, optional ~200m climb. Shorten it, stay at the base, or watch from camp; Khavtsgait Petroglyphs, there is an optional ~120m rocky climb, loose stones (poles helpful); skip and wait at the base.
Luggage: Passengers must manage their own bags during hotel check-ins, airport procedures, and particularly at land border crossings where walking distances can exceed 1 km in hot conditions.
Accessibility: Not all hotels have lifts; occasional stairs and uneven surfaces are common. Border crossings and heritage sites may lack shade, ramps or paved paths. Ger and yurt camp beds may be lower to the ground than in a hotel.
Terrain & environment
Cities and towns (Ulaanbaatar, Almaty, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, etc.): mostly paved and cobblestone walking, with uneven steps and limited shade.
Nature and rural areas (Gobi Desert, Darvaza Desert, mountain valleys, archaeological ruins): dirt and rocky trails, occasional loose gravel or sand, and exposure to direct sun.
Driving conditions: Roads across Mongolia and parts of Central Asia can be extremely rough and uneven. While vehicles are comfortable, the ride can be jarring for extended periods, and 4WD-style vehicles in remote areas are not wheelchair accessible.
Mobility & accessibility
This tour is not suitable for travellers who are fully wheelchair dependent. Some city sites are partially accessible, but the Gobi Desert, central steppe, ger and yurt camps, border crossings and many heritage sites are not designed for wheelchair access. Travellers with mild mobility limitations may be able to participate with adjustments, but this should be assessed before booking. Please reach out to Inspiring Vacations directly to discuss mobility aids or wheelchair use.
Many walks can be shortened or skipped – for example the Khongor dune ascent, the Khavtsgait hike, the climb to Ariyabal Meditation Temple, and the climb to the Chinggis Khan statue viewing platform – with travellers remaining at the base, in the vehicle or at the camp.
Accommodation:
Accommodation in Mongolia includes a city hotel in Ulaanbaatar and traditional ger camps in the countryside.
In Mongolia, you’ll stay in comfortable twin-share gers throughout the journey, with ensuite facilities included on Days 4–7 and 9–11. On Days 3 and 8, camps have a limited number of ensuite gers, which are allocated fairly on a random basis. To ensure a balanced experience, travellers who stay in a standard ger with shared facilities on Day 3 will be prioritised for an ensuite ger on Day 8. Shared bathroom facilities are clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located close to the gers, offering hot showers and Western-style toilets.
Accommodation in the Five Stans uses 3 and 4-star premium hotels, offering a higher standard in the region. Most hotels feature enhanced comfort, better amenities and more central locations, enhancing your stay after each day of exploration. That said, it’s important to be transparent about a few destinations where accommodation options are limited:
In some more remote locations, accommodation here is limited to approximately 3-star standard, and more rustic with their features.
Hotel standards can vary across the country. In capital and major cities, you can generally expect a higher level of comfort and amenities than in smaller towns. Rest assured, we always do our best to select quality accommodation for your stay.
We also stay two incredible nights in a traditional Yurt Camp. As yurt accommodation is an essential part of experiencing the region. The Yurt stays are on a twin shared basis (2 people per Yurt) private rooms are not provided. This applies to both twin share and solo travellers. Rooming configuration will vary from group to group and genders are likely to be mixed. In Tamga (Yurt Stay) we will have a simple ensuite facility. In Darvaza (Yurt Stay), toilet and shower facilities are outside of the yurts.
Climate considerations
Conditions can vary dramatically – expect desert heat exceeding 40°C (sometimes up to 45°C) on certain days, contrasted with cool or even cold temperatures in Mongolia and mountainous areas. Sun protection, hydration and layered clothing are essential.
Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability and where required, supporting documentation may be requested to ensure that we are comfortable that you will enjoy your tour.
Group Size
Minimum: 6 people, Maximum: 16 people
Escorted Style
Your Mongolia portion is fully escorted by a dedicated English-speaking tour leader who accompanies you throughout that part of the journey. Across the Five Stans you will be met by a new dedicated local tour leader in each country, who will accompany you throughout that country; any internal flights are unescorted, and during border crossings there will be a short period when you are unescorted. Your tour leaders coordinate with each other to ensure a seamless transition.
Tour Type
Our expertly crafted Small Group Tours take you to iconic landmarks and hidden treasures, ensuring a rich blend of must-see sights. Unwind in premium accommodations after each day filled with sightseeing alongside your dedicated tour leader, leaving you free to explore at your own pace during designated free time. Benefit from smaller group sizes, creating a truly unforgettable travel experience.

Getting Around
This is a multi-country journey using a mix of transport. While touring Mongolia you will travel in private Japanese 4WD-style vans (such as the Mitsubishi Delica or Hyundai Starex), carrying up to 7 passengers per vehicle; larger groups travel in a small convoy, rejoining at each stop. Coaches are not suitable for the unpaved tracks of the Gobi and central steppe. Drives between regions can be long (approximately 2 to 8 hours) and roads are often unpaved, rough or washboard. You'll take an international flight from Ulaanbaatar to Almaty to join the Five Stans leg of the tour.
Across the Five Stans you will travel by private coach, with occasional 4WD vehicles, an internal flight (Bishkek–Tashkent) and a train (Samarkand–Bukhara). Central Asia is a vast region, so some travel days are long (up to 8–10 hours) and roads, especially outside the capital cities, can be very bumpy with occasional traffic delays.
For longer journeys, comfort stops will be made where you can freshen up, stretch your legs and, where available, purchase refreshments. In remote areas, facilities can be very basic and you should be prepared for roadside stops with no formal toilets. Coaches and vans do not have onboard toilets. Wi-Fi and charging outlets are not available in the vehicles, so we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
The internal flight in the Stans is a group flight arranged by our local partner; specific flight details are provided by your Tour Leader upon arrival and cannot be provided in advance. Devices with lithium batteries, spare batteries and power banks must be carried in hand luggage. These group flights cannot be upgraded, amended or checked in online – your Tour Leader manages the check-in process for the group.
Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don’t just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel’s typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Accommodation Details
This tour features a mix of 3 and 4-star hotels across Mongolia and Central Asia, together with traditional ger and yurt camps that are a highlight of the journey. Each property has been carefully chosen to balance the comforts travellers expect in the cities with the authentic experience of staying out on the steppe and in the desert. Our team continuously reviews and updates our selections, incorporating customer feedback.
In Mongolia, a traditional ger (yurt) is a round, felt-lined tent used by nomads for centuries. Each camp is a cluster of gers with a central dining yurt. Gers are heated by a wood stove and feature twin beds with bedding and towels provided – simply bring your own toiletries. Power, signal and Wi-Fi at ger camps are limited and can be intermittent. The Gobi Erdene camp at the Khongor Sand Dunes does not have 24-hour electricity due to its remote location and runs on generator power, with electricity available daily from 7:00am to 11:00pm. A limited number of ensuite gers are available at two camps and are allocated fairly on a random basis; travellers in a standard ger on the first of these nights are prioritised for an ensuite ger on the second. Shared bathroom facilities include hot showers and Western-style toilets.
In Central Asia the tour uses 3 and 4-star premium hotels, offering a higher standard for the region, with most hotels enhanced in comfort, amenities and central location. Note that in Karakol (Kyrgyzstan) accommodation is limited to approximately 3-star standard and is more rustic. Hotel standards vary across the region; in capital and major cities you can generally expect a higher level of comfort than in smaller towns.
You will also stay two nights in traditional yurt camps in the Stans. Yurt accommodation is twin-share only (2 people per yurt) and private rooms are not provided – this applies to both twin-share and solo travellers, and rooming configuration varies from group to group with genders likely to be mixed. In Tamga the yurt camp has a simple ensuite bathroom; in Darvaza, toilet and shower facilities are outside the yurts, with communal bathrooms located 100–150 metres away. Electricity in the yurts may not always be reliable; travellers requiring a constant power supply should contact us.
Packing Essentials
This journey spans Mongolia’s continental climate and traditional camps, plus the hot deserts, cool mountains and Silk Road cities of Central Asia. We recommend bringing the following:
A lockable wheeled suitcase no heavier than 23 kg is ideal given the internal flight luggage limit, or a 45–50 litre backpack. Whenever possible, avoid bringing valuables, use your hotel safe and keep photocopies of important documents separate from the originals.
This tour crosses two climate zones, both continental, with hot dry summers and cold winters. Expect a wide temperature range, from cool or sub-zero nights to desert days above 40°C.
Climate
Mongolia
Spring (Mar–May): Cold and windy early, warming to mild days (10–20°C) by May. Dust storms are common and nights stay cold.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Warm to hot, with Gobi days topping 30°C. The wettest period, with short heavy afternoon storms, and the time of the Naadam Festival (11–13 July).
Autumn (Sep–Oct): Mild, clear days (5–20°C) and golden steppe, cooling fast to near freezing at night. A favourite time to travel.
Winter (Nov–Feb): Long and extremely cold, often below -20°C, but dry with bright skies and light snow rather than deep cover.
Central Asia (the five stans)
Spring (Mar–May): One of the best times to visit. Mild and green, around 15–25°C, though deserts can top 40°C by late May.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and dry, frequently above 40°C in lowland and desert areas. The mountains stay cooler and are best for trekking.
Autumn (Sep–Oct): The other ideal window, with comfortable temperatures (around 20–25°C) and clear skies for sightseeing.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold and dry in the lowlands (near or below 0°C), much colder with snow at altitude.
Whatever the season, pack layers, sun protection and a warm jacket for evenings.
Currency and ATMs
This tour crosses several currencies, and US dollars are an essential backup throughout. We strongly recommend bringing enough good-condition US dollars for your arrival into Turkmenistan, as you will need cash to pay for your visa and the on-arrival COVID-19 test.
General Tips:
Your tour leader in each country can advise on exchanging USD. Where possible, using ATMs in major cities offers better rates than exchange services. Please note that AUD and other currencies may not be accepted, so USD is the best option for currency exchange. Inform your bank of your travel plans before departure and be aware of potential foreign-card ATM fees.
Food and Allergies
From hearty Mongolian fare shaped by nomadic herding heritage to the pilafs, grilled meats, breads and pastries of the Silk Road, this journey offers a rich and varied culinary experience. In Mongolia expect plenty of meat (mutton, beef and goat), dairy, noodles and dumplings such as buuz and khuushuur, with far more variety in Ulaanbaatar. Across Central Asia, look out for plov (pilaf), shashlik, samsa, fresh non bread and the produce of the bustling bazaars.
For travellers with dietary restrictions, vegetarian, vegan and strict gluten-free options can be limited outside the major cities and in remote camps, but can often be arranged in advance if we are notified ahead of departure. Traditional Central Asian and Mongolian cuisine is generally not tailored to specific dietary needs, especially vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free diet, so please communicate your requirements clearly and well before departure. Exercise caution with street food to avoid stomach upsets – choose vendors with good hygiene and eat freshly prepared dishes.
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you’ll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings across Mongolia and Central Asia. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide or Local Guide will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour. For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.
Local Customs
Both Mongolia and the Five Stans have rich cultures shaped by nomadic tradition and, in Central Asia, by Islam. Respect for religion is important throughout: dress modestly at monasteries and mosques, covering shoulders and knees, and remove your hat (and at some sites your shoes) before entering. At Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia, walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels and avoid pointing your feet at altars or religious images. When visiting a Mongolian ger, never step on the threshold, do not whistle inside, and accept food or drink with your right hand; it is polite to at least taste anything offered.
Across Central Asia, locals are generally welcoming and hospitable; dress modestly especially in rural or conservative areas, and learning a few basic local phrases goes a long way. Pointing with a single finger is considered impolite – gesture with an open hand. Photography may be restricted at some religious and government sites; always follow your guide’s instructions and ask before photographing people.
Same-sex couples can stay in the same hotel room and reserve a double room. However, some hotels might change the room to a twin.
As per many other Muslim countries, same-sex couples are recommended to avoid affectionate displays in public.
Dress Code
Dress is generally practical and casual, with a focus on staying comfortable across hot days and cool evenings and on respecting local customs. Lightweight, breathable clothing suits the warm daytime, with warm layers and a windproof, waterproof shell for cool mornings, evenings and the mountains. Smart casual clothing is suitable for city hotels and restaurants.
When visiting monasteries, mosques and other religious sites, please dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and remove your hat before entering. Women should avoid revealing clothing and may wish to carry a light scarf to cover the head, shoulders or arms; men should avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts at religious sites. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended over sandals for sightseeing and hikes. There is no expectation of formal dress at any point on this tour.
Responsible Dining
Avoid consuming endangered species or items harvested unsustainably. Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.
When dining in Central Asia, it's important to be mindful of ethical and sustainable practices. Opt for locally sourced ingredients and support small, family-run businesses. By choosing dishes made with fresh, seasonal produce, you can contribute to the local economy and reduce your environmental impact. Additionally, consider the ethical implications of meat consumption, particularly horse meat, which is a delicacy in some regions. If you have concerns about animal welfare, you may want to choose vegetarian or vegan options. By making informed choices, you can enjoy the delicious cuisine of Central Asia while minimizing your negative impact.

A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package and is entirely at your discretion. Tipping is not compulsory in Mongolia or Central Asia, but it is an established and appreciated part of the tourism industry and can make a real difference to the people looking after you. Tips can be given in local currency or USD, whichever is easier.
Tipping is not compulsory in Mongolia, but if you're happy with the service you've received, a small gratuity is always appreciated. It may not be customary at home, but it means a great deal to the people looking after you during your travels and is an established part of the tourism industry here. Tips can be given in MNT or USD, whichever is easier.
The following amounts are based on local norms and feedback from past travellers:
Tipping is part of the culture in Central Asia, and they can make a big difference to locals employed in the tourism industry. If you feel that your guide and driver have done an impeccable job, you can choose to give a gratuity, but this is entirely your decision.
If you are happy with the services provided, we recommend tipping $3-5 USD per day per person for your drivers and $5-7 USD per day per person for your local guides.
It is also common practice to leave a tip of around 10% at restaurants, particularly in more tourist-friendly or higher-end establishments, as a gesture of appreciation for good service.
You are of course free to tip more or less based on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. A tip should reflect excellent service, not obligation.
Peak Travel Times
The peak travel season in Mongolia is the short summer window from June to August, when the weather is warmest, the steppe is at its greenest, and ger camps and national parks are in full operation. July is the busiest single month, coinciding with the Naadam Festival in early to mid-July — Mongolia's most important national celebration, featuring traditional wrestling, horse racing and archery. Visiting around Naadam can mean higher prices, busier hotels in Ulaanbaatar and a much more lively, festive atmosphere across the country.
The shoulder months of late May, early June and September offer cooler weather, fewer travellers and beautiful changing colours on the steppe, though ger camps may begin to close from late September and overnight temperatures drop significantly. Winter travel (November to March) is extremely cold, with temperatures regularly well below freezing, and is generally outside the operating season for this tour.
The peak travel season in Central Asia generally falls between May and September when the weather is warm and dry. However, specific peak times can vary depending on the country and region. For instance, in countries like Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the summer months are ideal for hiking and trekking in the mountains. Uzbekistan on the other hand, can be quite hot during the peak summer months, so spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are often considered the best times to visit. By understanding the peak travel seasons, you can plan your trip to avoid crowds and potentially higher prices.
Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government’s advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.
Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary; however, you’ll have some free time to explore on your own. While your tour leader or local guide will assist as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. In Central Asia, stay informed of the latest advisories, exercise caution in crowded areas and during demonstrations, and be mindful of your surroundings.
Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it’s deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
While Central Asia offers a unique and rewarding travel experience, it's essential to prioritise safety. It's advisable to stay informed about the latest travel advisories and security alerts issued by your government. Exercise caution, particularly in crowded areas and during political demonstrations. Avoid travelling alone at night and be mindful of your surroundings.
Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate (the lens function is especially useful for reading product labels, signs and menus, and Mongolian is now supported), Google Maps with offline maps downloaded for navigation without Wi-Fi, and Maps.me as a backup with detailed offline coverage of rural areas. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using it to communicate with other group members while on tour; your tour leaders may also use it to share essential trip information.
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our trips. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-trip cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.
Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.
Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.
Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations
We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.
Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.
Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, such as the ger and yurt camps, may have limited or intermittent access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.
The Ulaanbaatar hotel has standard power outlets in guest rooms. Mongolia uses 220V/50Hz power, commonly with Type C and Type E outlets, so travellers should bring a suitable travel adaptor.
In ger camps, power supply can vary and outages may occur. At some camps, electricity may only be available during certain hours and may not reliably support overnight CPAP use. Travellers who rely on a CPAP machine should bring a suitable portable battery pack and advise Inspiring Vacations before departure.
Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Travelling in a Group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
Staying Connected
This is a remote journey in parts, so reliable connectivity is something to plan around rather than rely on. In the cities – Ulaanbaatar and the Stans’ capitals – mobile coverage is good and hotels offer Wi-Fi; international roaming, an eSIM or a local SIM will generally work well. Across the Gobi and central Mongolian steppe, mobile signal is patchy to non-existent and some ger camps offer only limited, slow Wi-Fi in the dining yurt – expect stretches of two to three days with no calls, messages or internet. The Gobi Erdene camp at Khongor Sand Dunes runs on generator power (7am–11pm only).
Before you go, let family know you’ll be out of contact for parts of the trip, download offline maps (Google Maps and Maps.me) plus any translation tools, music or books for long drives and evenings at camp, and bring a portable power bank as charging at camps is limited. On tour, WhatsApp is useful in the cities and your tour leader will usually set up a group chat. For many travellers, the digital break ends up being a highlight rather than a frustration – the Gobi night skies are extraordinary.
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
This is a Land Only package.
This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination. Business class) and view flight durations and transit times to your destination.
The flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub once the following criteria has been met:
