Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our tours. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-tour cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international tours, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

In the unlikely event of a situation that could potentially disrupt your tour, we want to assure you of the following:
By staying informed and working together, we can ensure a fantastic travel experience for you. We will post our own travel updates to our website here.
Starting Point
Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.
Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.
Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.
Arrival Details
Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are arriving as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your arrangements to the starting hotel.
Where the service remains included, on arrival look out for a representative holding an “Inspiring Vacations” sign after you have collected your baggage and exited customs. If you cannot find them, try to avoid wandering around and instead stay in one place and call the emergency contact number on your documentation.
Where the service has been forfeited due to an early arrival and extended stay, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub. We recommend you wait until you receive your final documentation to book transfers as your start and end hotels will only be confirmed at this point. Please note that if you are choosing to book an independent airport transfer service, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise, nor can they resolve any concerns that you may have with your transfer service.
To make your way to your hotel from the airport, there are various connections by train or limousine bus. The airport information desks can provide helpful advice, too. Most destinations offer ride-share services, such as Uber or Didi.
If you're having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.
In Case of Emergency
Although we strive to deliver exceptional holiday experiences, unforeseen circumstances can occasionally arise during travel. If any issues arise during your tour, it's essential to promptly communicate them to your tour leader or local representative. This ensures they can take immediate action to address the problem and mitigate any negative impact on the remainder of your journey.
We understand that there may be instances where your tour leader or local representative is unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction. In such cases, we encourage you to request that the tour leader or local representative escalate the matter to their direct manager for further assistance.
When your final tour documentation is released, this will include an emergency contact for our local travel partner while you are on tour. If this is not included in your documentation, you will receive this on arrival during your welcome meeting.
Hotel City Taxes
All current taxes are included in your tour (VAT, city permits, road taxes, visitor taxes, fuel charges and any other applicable charges), with the exception of city taxes which are to be paid directly to each hotel. The tax will vary from €3-€5 per person per day depending on the hotel booked. Please note that this tax is dictated by the government entities, can only be paid locally and can change without any warning to Inspiring Vacations.
Venice Access Fee
Venice has implemented an access fee charged to day trip visitors who are not staying overnight in the municipality of Venice, during specific high season dates. The calendar of dates is available here.
If you are staying in an accommodation in the municipality of Venice, then you are exempt from this fee. However, to avoid paying the fee you must register for an exemption by filling out an exemption request here. The exemption form will provide you with a QR code you can show on your phone.
If required for your travel dates, you may pre-book once you have received your final documents confirming your hotel. The exemption must be completed before entering the city, but can be done while traveling.

Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.

Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your itinerary may need to be adjusted slightly to improve your overall experience.

Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure.
We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.
Getting Around
This trip is built around the efficient and scenic rail networks of Paris, Italy, and Switzerland, offering a comfortable, sustainable, and relaxed way to explore all three countries. You’ll travel on a mix of high-speed, intercity, and regional trains—with tickets and seat reservations included. Train journeys are part of the experience, showcasing everything from Parisian boulevards and Italian vineyards to Switzerland’s alpine peaks and lakeside towns. Centrally located stations make it easy to reach your accommodation and start exploring on foot.
Most sightseeing is independent and on foot—especially in historic centers where many streets are pedestrian-only or cobbled. Optional tours may include transfers, but you should be prepared for regular walking, including stairs, train platforms, and uneven terrain.
Private airport transfers are included at the start of the trip for a smooth arrival and are available as an optional add-on for your return. While taxis can be arranged through hotels if needed, they are not included unless specified in your itinerary.
You’ll be responsible for carrying your own luggage throughout the trip, including on and off trains—so packing light is highly recommended for comfort and flexibility.

Below are the approximate train journey durations for key travel segments included in this itinerary. All travel is by comfortable, pre-booked rail services—mainly high-speed trains in Italy and scenic regional or panoramic trains in Switzerland.

Venice → Milan: High-speed train, approx. 2 hours 30 minutes

Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Accommodation Details
Throughout the trip, you'll stay in comfortable, centrally located 4-star hotels that have been carefully selected for their quality, convenience, and proximity to train stations. This allows for easy arrival and departure in each city, minimizing transfers and making your independent travel experience as smooth as possible.
All hotels are within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the train station, and also offer easy access to major attractions, dining, and local transport options. Daily breakfast is included, and staff are generally English-speaking and happy to assist with local recommendations.
Room categories are standard double or twin rooms with private bathrooms. If you have any specific room or bedding preferences, please let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to accommodate them.
Luggage storage is usually available at each hotel should you arrive before check-in or need to store bags after check-out.
Luggage Requirements
As this is an independent rail-based trip, you’ll be responsible for carrying your own luggage on and off trains, through stations, and to your accommodation. For this reason, we strongly recommend packing light and choosing luggage that is easy to handle.
Recommended: One medium-sized suitcase or travel backpack (with wheels or straps) plus a small daypack for daily use.
Not suitable: Large, heavy suitcases or multiple bags per person, as they can be difficult to manage on busy train platforms and in station stairwells or narrow streets.
Keep in mind that some train stations do not have escalators or elevators, and historic city centres often have cobblestone streets. Comfortable luggage with good mobility will greatly enhance your travel experience.
Packing Essentials
What you need to pack will depend on the time of year and your personal travel style. We recommend packing light and ensuring you can comfortably carry and lift your luggage, including up and down stairs when necessary.

Climate
Italy, Switzerland, and France all offer diverse climates throughout the year, with regional and elevation-based variations that are important to consider when planning your trip.
Spring (March–May) brings mild and pleasant weather across all three countries. In Italy, temperatures range from around 10°C (50°F) in the north (e.g. Venice) to 20°C (68°F) in the south (e.g. Sorrento and Bari). Switzerland experiences similar conditions in cities like Lucerne and Interlaken, though mountain regions remain cooler. In France, spring is also a beautiful season, with Paris averaging 12–18°C (54–64°F) and southern regions like Provence and the Côte d’Azur warming up earlier. It’s a great time for sightseeing, with fewer crowds and blooming landscapes. Light layers, a jacket, and an umbrella for the occasional rain shower are recommended.
Summer (June–August) can be hot and dry in Italy, particularly in the south, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s°C (mid-90s°F). Rome and Florence can be especially warm. Switzerland remains milder, particularly in alpine towns like Interlaken and St. Moritz, with highs between 20–28°C (68–82°F). France varies—Paris and much of the north can get warm, while the south (Nice, Lyon) may see temperatures in the high 20s or low 30s°C (80s–90s°F). It’s ideal for coastal visits, hiking, and outdoor dining. Pack breathable clothing, sun protection, and a light jacket for cooler evenings in the mountains.
Autumn (September–November) brings moderate and comfortable temperatures throughout the region. Italy’s southern coast remains warm (20–25°C / 68–77°F), while the north begins to cool. Switzerland sees crisp air and vibrant fall colors, especially around lakes and mountain trails. France enjoys a mild start to autumn, particularly in the south, and Paris tends to remain pleasant through October. It’s also harvest season, perfect for food and wine experiences. A sweater or light jacket is useful for evenings.
Winter (December–February) varies significantly by region. Southern Italy (Rome, Sorrento) and southern France (Nice, Marseille) enjoy mild winters (10–15°C / 50–59°F), while northern Italy and inland France are colder. Switzerland and the French Alps experience snowy, sub-zero conditions—perfect for winter sports. Paris sees average highs around 5–7°C (41–45°F), often with grey skies but charming festive atmospheres. Warm layers, a good coat, and waterproof shoes are essential for alpine and northern city travel.
Currency and ATMs
In Italy and France, the currency is the Euro (€). In Switzerland, the official currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). While Switzerland is not part of the Eurozone, some tourist areas may accept Euros, but change will typically be given in Francs and at an unfavourable rate—so it’s best to use local currency.
ATMs are widely available in cities, towns, and tourist areas in both countries. Major international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) are generally accepted across hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash, especially for small purchases, public transportation, market stalls, or when visiting rural areas where card use may be limited.
Some smaller towns, cafés, or family-run establishments may have a cash-only policy or prefer cash for lower-value transactions. For convenience, carry a mix of larger and smaller denominations in the appropriate local currency.
If you're booking optional tours or additional services while traveling, credit cards are often accepted, but having cash on hand is helpful. We also recommend notifying your bank of your travel dates in advance to avoid any issues with international card usage.
Food and Allergies
Travelling by rail through Italy, Switzerland, and France is not only a scenic journey but also a delicious one—offering the chance to experience three countries with rich, regional culinary traditions and iconic flavors.
In Italy, every stop reveals a new local specialty. In Rome, try beloved pasta dishes like carbonara and cacio e pepe in cozy trattorias. Naples, the birthplace of pizza, is the place for a wood-fired Margherita. In Tuscany, enjoy bold, rustic fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina and local Chianti wines. And in Venice, delight in cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and creamy seafood risottos along the canals.
In Switzerland, cuisine varies by region. In German-speaking areas like Lucerne, try fondue, raclette, and Rösti. French-speaking regions offer refined dishes with continental flair—think buttery pastries, creamy sauces, and elegant desserts. In Ticino, the Italian-speaking region, you'll find Mediterranean-style dishes, fresh pastas, and risottos with a Swiss twist.
In France, your journey ends in the culinary capital of the world—Paris. From flaky croissants and baguettes to café classics like steak frites and duck confit, the city is a feast for the senses. Visit a local fromagerie for artisanal cheeses, explore bustling food markets, or indulge in a multi-course bistro meal. Don’t forget to try the pastries—macarons, éclairs, and tarte tatin are just the beginning.
Daily breakfast is included, while other meals are at your leisure—giving you the freedom to explore each destination’s food scene, whether that’s a mountain-view picnic, a café lunch, or a fine dining experience. Optional food and wine experiences are available in select cities for those wanting a deeper taste of the local cuisine.
If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, please inform our Customer Support Team before departure. While Italy, Switzerland, and France are generally accommodating to different diets, you're responsible for managing your food choices and ensuring they align with your personal needs throughout the journey.
Local Customs
In Italy, Switzerland, and France, cultural norms highlight strong local pride, each with its own style.
In Italy, greetings are warm—handshakes in formal settings and cheek kisses among friends. Switzerland tends to be more formal, with firm handshakes and sometimes three cheek kisses among close contacts. In France, two light cheek kisses (la bise) are common, alongside handshakes in formal situations.
Meal times vary: Italians enjoy late lunches (1–2:30 PM) and dinners (often after 8 PM), while Swiss meals are earlier and more punctual—lunch around noon and dinner by 7–8 PM. French lunches run midday, with dinner usually between 7:30 and 9 PM. All three countries value meals as social and cultural experiences.
When visiting religious or cultural sites, dress modestly and respectfully. Smaller towns may observe an afternoon closure (like siesta), reflecting a slower pace of life.
Embracing these customs will deepen your experience and help you connect authentically with locals throughout Italy, Switzerland, and France.
Tipping
Tipping practices in Italy, Switzerland, and France tend to be modest and are never obligatory, but tipping is a thoughtful way to show appreciation for good service. Since this is an independent trip, tipping is entirely at your discretion based on your experience. Here’s a general guide for common tipping situations:
Restaurants
Italy: A service charge (coperto) is often included. If not, rounding up or leaving €1–€2 per person is appreciated. In higher-end places, 5–10% is typical.
Switzerland: Service charges are usually included. It’s customary to round up or leave 5–10 CHF for good service.
France: Service charge (service compris) is included by law, but leaving small change or rounding up is common, especially for exceptional service.
Hotel Staff
Tipping porters €1–€2 (or 1–2 CHF / €1–€2 in France) per bag is appropriate. Housekeeping appreciates €1–€2 (or 1–2 CHF / €1–€2) per day, especially for longer stays.
Taxi Drivers
Not expected, but rounding up the fare or adding a small tip (€1–€2 or 1–2 CHF / €1–€2) for helpful service is a nice gesture.
Tour Guides & Activity Providers
For optional tours, €5–€10 (or 5–10 CHF / €5–€10) per person for half-day, and €10–€15 (or 10–15 CHF / €10–€15) for full-day tours is a good guideline, depending on quality and effort.
Tipping is typically done in cash, so carrying small euro and Swiss franc coins or notes is handy. Remember, tipping is always optional and should reflect your satisfaction with the service.
Peak Travel Times
Travel seasons in Italy, Switzerland, and France each bring unique highlights. The high season (June to August) is the busiest, with warm weather attracting tourists to Italy’s cities and coasts, France’s vibrant cities and Riviera, and Switzerland’s mountain resorts buzzing with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Expect crowds and higher prices during this time.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are ideal across all three countries, offering milder weather, fewer tourists, and stunning scenery—Italy’s blooming countryside and harvest festivals, France’s colorful gardens and wine regions, and Switzerland’s vibrant foliage with peaceful mountain trails.
Winter (December to February) is quieter in Italy, especially in the south, though cities like Rome and Florence remain festive with holiday markets. France offers festive charm in cities like Paris and ski season in the Alps. Switzerland is in full ski mode, with alpine towns such as Zermatt and St. Moritz providing world-class snow sports and cozy winter atmospheres.
Planning around these seasonal patterns will help you make the most of your time in all three destinations.
Safety and Security
Italy, Switzerland, and France are generally safe and welcoming destinations. However, it’s important to check your government’s travel advice before departure and ensure your travel insurance covers all countries and planned activities.
Common sense goes a long way—stay alert in busy areas like train stations, markets, and popular tourist spots where pickpocketing can occur, especially in cities like Rome, Florence, Milan, Zurich, and Paris. Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying valuables. At night, stick to well-lit areas and use reputable transportation.
If you participate in any optional or independent activities, ensure they’re offered by licensed, trustworthy operators. As this is an independent trip, you are responsible for your own safety and decisions throughout. Staying aware and informed will help you enjoy a smooth, worry-free journey.
Apps to Download
A few handy apps can make your journey smoother. For language, Google Translate (with camera/Lens function) is great for reading signs and menus. Google Maps is essential for navigation—download offline maps for cities like Rome, Venice, Milan, Florence, Paris, Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken. Citymapper is helpful in major urban areas, while Trainline and Trenitalia (Italy), SBB Mobile (Switzerland), and SNCF Connect (France) are excellent for checking train schedules and platforms.
For public transport, ATAC Roma (Rome), RATP (Paris), and ZVV (Zurich) apps are useful. Free Now and It Taxi help book taxis across these countries, and WhatsApp is widely used to stay connected.
Download and set up these apps before your trip to save time and simplify your travels.
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. Your tour leader or local guide may also provide you with a QR code that you can scan using your device to access our survey straight away. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.

Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.
