Santorini was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century that has shaped its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cube-shaped houses of its two principal towns cling to the island's cliffs and provide a beautiful contrast to the shimmering turquoise waters below.

Later, we'll continue on to the capital, Tirana. A beguiling mix of Ottoman-, Fascist- and Soviet-era architecture, Tirana is also a surprisingly leafy city full of cafes and historic monuments. Pastel coloured buildings surround the city's focal point, Skanderbeg Square, which is named for its equestrian statue of a national hero. On the square's north end is the modernist National History Museum, covering prehistoric times through to communist rule and the anti-communist uprisings of the 1990s.

Twenty years after the end of a devastating war, Sarajevo is slowly asserting itself as one of Europe's most beautiful and interesting cities. The city mixes east and west dotted with minarets, mosques, bazaars and the aroma of coffee.
