As we depart from Cape Town, we'll make a quick stop to admire Table Mountain from across Table Bay then head approximately 200 km north towards the pretty rural township of Citrusdal located at the base of the Cederberg mountains. Along the way we stop at traditional "Padstal" – charming farm stalls scattered along South Africa's byways, offering a variety of homemade treats and baked goods.
The Cederberg region not only showcases stunning mountains and orange farms but is also the birthplace of the Rooibos bush. Indigenous to the mountain slopes of the Cederberg, this herbal beverage has gained international acclaim as a healthy and refreshing alternative to regular tea.

Along the way we start to find desert landscapes unfolding before us as we reach the Namaqualand region. Famed for its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its stunning wild flowers during spring (July to September), the Namakwa coastline and the banks of the Orange River are popular for their hiking trails and off-roading routes for locals and tourists alike. Although initially named after the Dutch Royal House, the Orange River has more recently been referred to by its original name, Gariep, meaning "river" in the indigenous KhoeKhoe language. Originating in the mountains of Lesotho, the Orange River stands as South Africa's longest river, providing a captivating contrast to the surrounding desert landscapes along its banks. To truly appreciate this region, the best approach is to venture onto its waters, and this morning, enjoy a canoe trip on the river with your guide.
Following lunch, we bid farewell to the Orange River and continue our journey through Namibia as we head approximately 130 km inland to the Fish River Canyon and have an opportunity to stretch our legs with a gentle walk along the rim of the canyon. Afterwards, we turn west and head for Keetmanshoop where we will overnight.
Our morning will be spent meandering through the Quiver Tree Forest and The Giants Playground – named for the way in which the massive dolerite boulders have been placed on each other – creating rock formations and a series of mazes. Every overland journey has some long travelling days and today is one of those as we venture deeper into the Namib Desert. Our destination is the dune fields that cover the western reaches of the desert. Long dusty roads and sparsely populated farmlands offer us an insight into the vastness of rural Namibia. A 4x4 transfer then takes us into Sossusvlei, where we explore the pans at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei on foot. Our desert exploration culminates with a visit to the Sesriem Canyon. As night falls, we shake off the red sand from our shoes and settle in for the night beneath the magnificent desert stars, having immersed ourselves in the wonders of this unforgiving landscape throughout the day.

Tour Style
To meet the needs of various types of travelers, we choose to operate various types of tours, and depending on your selected package will mean different services are provided throughout your trip. The following descriptions of each tour style we hope will ensure that each traveller has appropriate expectations before they start their travels:
Camping:
With the exception of Cape Town and Swakopmund, accommodation for this tour is camping. You are provided with heavy duty canvas dome tents which are standing height and approximately 2.5 x 2.5m across the base. You need to provide your own pillow, sleeping bag and towel. A sleeping mattress is provided. The tents are easy to put up and have flexible self-supporting poles. There is a flysheet provided for rainy weather and a built-in mosquito net which should be kept closed at all times. Your guide will explain the correct way of putting up and taking down your tent.
Most of the camp sites have shared toilet and shower facilities, but hot water is not always avaialble. Some places that we visit are bush camps where there are no facilities.
Accommodated - Optional Upgrade:
If you prefer not to camp, please select the Accommodation Upgrade option in the purchase path at the time of making your booking. Accommodation will be in traditional huts, permanent tented camps and hotel rooms, the majority of these are ensuite. All bedding & towels will be provided. Accommodation is typically situated within the same campgrounds as the campers and communal meals are prepared and enjoyed at the truck with the group.
All participants must be in good physical condition to fully engage in this journey. For the safety and welfare of yourself and fellow travellers, if you are feeling unwell prior to departure, we advise staying home and contacting us to arrange alternate plans.
Prior to selecting your trip, carefully review the itinerary to assess your ability to comfortably manage our travel style. Please be aware that if, based on evaluation by our leader or local representative, a participant is deemed unable to safely complete the itinerary, we retain the right to exclude them from all or part of the trip without reimbursement.
It is advisable to consult your physician for current medical travel advisories and any required vaccinations before embarking. We recommend carrying a first aid kit and any necessary medications in their original packaging, as they may not be readily available during travel. For those carrying medication, it's essential to check your government's foreign travel guidelines for local restrictions or regulations.
Your luggage is limited to one backpack/duffle bag and one day pack weighing no more than 23kg. As a general rule, if you cannot lift your own luggage, you’ve packed too much! Most people make the mistake of bringing too many clothes on tour, less is more in this instance.
Please keep in mind that this is a safari tour in a specially designed overland vehicle and luggage should not include any Samsonite style suitcases. As the wheelie / trolley bags have a solid frame, they don’t fit into spaces the same way a backpack or a duffel bag does. A compact, flexible, soft shell (without a hard frame) duffel bag is perfect for fitting into a locker of our camping & accommodated tours.
On the camping tours you will be required to bring your own sleeping bag as we do not rent out sleeping bags. We often get asked what sort of sleeping bag is needed for our tours. There are many factors that you should consider when choosing your sleeping bag including, weather conditions, season and the minimum temperatures at night time. Each sleeping bag will have a temperature rating that will indicate either a Risk (weather colder than -3°C), Transition (2°C - 5°C), or Comfort (6°C - 10°C) rating. Also take into account what type of sleeper you are; do you like to layer, do you easily get cold or do you tend to heat up.
You will be provided a mattress, which is 5cm thick, so you have a comfortable night’s sleep. Pillows are not provided, so if you would like to use one, please make sure you bring one with you.
Those upgrading to the accommodated tour, all bedding, towels and toiletries will be provided.
You will need a smaller bag, big enough to bring basic equipment (toiletries and clothes) for two nights – when we visit Khwai Conservation Area and Savuti National Parks as we will be separated from the truck for two nights and space is limited it the 4x4 open safari vehicles.
Overland vehicles are custom built to conform to the highest safety standards and are approved by the South African safety regulator (NRCS) according to strict standards. All overland vehicles have 24 seats taking a maximum of 20 guests, and has additional packing space for camping equipment. There is also a small club area on board ideal for playing cards or socialising and seat rotation is encouraged.
Each traveler has their own allocated locker with the dimensions 35cm wide, 35cm high and 80cm deep - please ensure that your belongings can fit into this secured locker. There will be no concessions given for those whose bags exceed these dimensions.
Please note there is no air-conditioning, wifi or toilets on these overland vehicles.

tinted windows & shading
individual USB ports
