CPAP and power access: The Ulaanbaatar hotel has standard power outlets in guest rooms. Mongolia uses 220V/50Hz power, commonly with Type C and Type E outlets, so travellers should bring a suitable travel adaptor.
In ger camps, power supply can vary and outages may occur. At some camps, electricity may only be available during certain hours and may not reliably support overnight CPAP use. Travellers who rely on a CPAP machine should bring a suitable portable battery pack and advise Inspiring Vacations before departure.
Health and medical considerations:
Mongolia is a remote destination, and medical facilities outside Ulaanbaatar are limited. Travellers with medical conditions should speak with their doctor before travelling and ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance, including emergency evacuation cover.
Travellers should bring any required medication, spare supplies, a personal first-aid kit and any mobility aids they require, as repairs or replacement equipment may not be available in remote areas.

Getting Around
This tour uses different transport on each leg, chosen to suit the terrain.
In Mongolia, you will travel in private 4WD-style vans (such as the Mitsubishi Delica or Hyundai Starex), carrying up to 7 passengers per vehicle; larger groups travel in a small convoy, rejoining at each stop. Coaches are not suitable for the unpaved tracks of the Gobi and central steppe. Drives between regions can be long – from around 2 to 8 hours – on roads that are often unpaved, rough or washboard. Comfort stops are made along the way, though facilities in remote areas can be very basic. Wi-Fi and charging outlets are not available in the vans, so charge devices beforehand or bring a portable charger.
In China, you will travel by dedicated coach, high-speed rail and an internal flight. High-speed rail connects Xi’an to Lanzhou, Lanzhou to Zhangye and Liuyuan to Turpan, and an internal flight takes you from Turpan (or Urumqi, depending on the final schedule) to Kashgar. All high-speed train stations have airport-style security, and aerosols larger than 150ml are prohibited on trains. In the cities, the metro is extensive and easy to navigate in Xi’an and Lanzhou, and rideshare is available in larger centres, though more limited in smaller towns.
Accommodation Details
This tour features a mix of traditional ger camps across the Gobi and central Mongolia, and centrally located 4-star hotels in Ulaanbaatar and China. Each property has been carefully chosen to reflect both the authentic experience of staying in a Mongolian ger out on the steppe and in the desert, and the comforts travellers expect in the cities. Our team continuously reviews and updates our selections, incorporating customer feedback to ensure every property is well-suited to the tour.
A traditional Mongolian ger (yurt) is a round, felt-lined tent used by nomads for centuries. Each camp is a cluster of gers with a central dining yurt; gers are heated by a wood stove and feature twin beds with bedding and towels provided – simply bring your own toiletries. Power, signal and Wi-Fi at ger camps are limited and can be intermittent. Only the Gobi Erdene camp at the Khongor Sand Dunes lacks 24-hour electricity, running on generator power (approx. 7:00 am–11:00 pm). A limited number of ensuite gers are available at two camps and are allocated fairly on a random basis, with priority on the second night for those in a standard ger on the first; shared facilities include hot showers and Western-style toilets.
Please note that smoking rooms are common in China. Many hotels offer designated non-smoking rooms, but in larger hotels with central air conditioning a residual smell of smoke may remain. We will always request a non-smoking room; if this occurs, please speak with your group leader about changing rooms.
Luggage Requirements
Luggage Limit: Due to limited space in the bus luggage compartments, it is crucial that each person limits their luggage to one piece weighing a maximum of 20kg. Additionally, you are allowed a carry-on pack that should easily fit under the seat or in small overhead compartments.
By following these guidelines and packing light, you will ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience during the tour.
Power banks without a CCC (China Compulsory Certification) mark are forbidden on domestic flights in China.
For train travel, aerosols larger than 150ml are prohibited. Enforcement may vary between stations, with some applying stricter checks than others. All high-speed train stations in China have airport-style security, including bag scans and body checks. If you are carrying small sharp items like nail clippers or scissors, it’s best to keep them in your hand luggage to prevent your checked baggage from being opened during security screening.
Packing Essentials
What you need to pack will vary with the season, but this two-country tour spans temperate China and Mongolia’s continental climate and traditional ger camps, so layers and versatile clothing are essential. We recommend packing as lightly as possible, ensuring you can carry and lift your own luggage. Due to limited space in vehicles, please limit luggage to one piece up to 20kg plus a small carry-on.
Climate
This tour crosses two regions with distinct climates – the temperate, four-season interior of north-western China and the extreme continental climate of Mongolia, which has long cold winters, short warm summers and notable day-to-night temperature variation even in summer. Conditions can change quickly, so pack layers, sun protection and a warm jacket for evenings, and stay well hydrated. As a guide:

Currency and ATMs
This tour uses two currencies. Mongolia’s official currency is the Mongolian Tögrög (MNT, also written Tugrik). ATMs are widely available in Ulaanbaatar and accept most major international cards, and credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the capital. Outside Ulaanbaatar, ATMs are limited or unavailable and cards are rarely accepted, so withdraw or exchange enough MNT before leaving the capital. Clean, undamaged US dollars are a useful backup in Ulaanbaatar, but only Tögrög is accepted elsewhere.
China’s official currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY or RMB). Major cities have plenty of ATMs, though not all accept foreign cards – Visa and Mastercard are more widely accepted than other international cards. Mobile payments such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used but can be difficult for foreign visitors to set up, so carry some cash, especially in smaller towns and at local restaurants and markets. We recommend informing your bank of your travel plans before departure.
Food and Allergies
Traditional Mongolian cuisine is hearty and shaped by nomadic herding heritage – expect plenty of meat (mutton, beef and goat), dairy, root vegetables, noodles and dumplings such as buuz and khuushuur. In Ulaanbaatar the dining scene is far more varied and international, while out in the Gobi and at ger camps meals are simpler and home-style. Vegetarian and vegan options are limited outside Ulaanbaatar but can usually be arranged in advance if notified ahead of departure, and strict gluten-free requirements can be challenging in remote areas. On the day with a nomadic family, you’ll have the chance to help prepare a traditional dish for lunch.
Chinese cuisine is incredibly diverse and regionally distinct, from spicy and oil-rich dishes to delicate dumplings, noodle soups and the lamb-based specialities of the Silk Road regions. English menus may be limited, but your guide will assist with ordering, and dietary requirements can often be accommodated, though options may be more limited in remote areas.
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you’ll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings in China and Mongolia. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide or Local Guide will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour. For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.
Local Customs
Mongolian culture is shaped by centuries of nomadic tradition and Tibetan Buddhism, with a strong code of hospitality and respect. When visiting a ger, never step on the threshold (step over it), do not whistle inside, and accept food or drink with your right hand; it is polite to at least taste anything offered. At Buddhist monasteries, walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, remove your hat before entering temples, and do not point your feet at altars, monks or religious images.
In China, public behaviour is generally modest and it’s polite to speak calmly. Personal space and queuing norms may differ from what you’re used to – this is simply part of daily life rather than rudeness. When visiting temples or historic sites, dress modestly and follow any posted guidance, and always ask before photographing people, particularly in rural areas. In both countries, gesture with an open hand rather than pointing with a single finger, and follow your guide’s instructions on photography at religious sites.
Dress Code
There is no strict dress code on this tour, and comfortable, practical clothing is recommended throughout. In Mongolia, dress is generally practical and casual with a focus on staying warm and protected from sun and wind – smart casual is suitable in Ulaanbaatar, while layered clothing is the priority out on tour. When visiting Buddhist monasteries, dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and remove your hat before entering temple buildings. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended over sandals at religious sites and on hikes.
In China’s cities, casual modern dress is fine, but modest, neat clothing covering shoulders and knees is appreciated at temples, rural areas and traditional sites. Comfortable, practical clothing and shoes are recommended for sightseeing, as many attractions involve walking or stairs.
Responsible Dining
While both China and Mongolia offer an incredible variety of local dishes, some food practices may differ from what you are used to. We strongly encourage travellers to make responsible choices and to avoid dishes that include endangered species or wildlife, or items harvested unsustainably. While China offers an incredible variety of local dishes and culinary experiences, some food practices may differ from what travellers are used to. You may come across items on menus that involve endangered species or questionable animal welfare standards. We strongly encourage travellers to make responsible choices by avoiding dishes that include shark fin, turtle, or exotic wildlife.
Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. If you’re ever unsure, your tour leader can help guide you in making conscious dining choices. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.
Tipping
A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package.
Tipping is not compulsory in Mongolia, but if you're happy with the service you've received, a small gratuity is always appreciated. It may not be customary at home, but it means a great deal to the people looking after you during your travels and is an established part of the tourism industry here. Tips can be given in MNT or USD, whichever is easier.
The following amounts are based on local norms and feedback from past travellers:
Tipping in China is a well-established custom within the tourism industry. A lump-sum tip will be collected from each individual at the end of the tour. The standard rate is 12 AUD (approximately 60 RMB) per person, per day.
You are of course free to tip more or less based on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. A tip should reflect excellent service, not obligation.
Peak Travel Times
In Mongolia, the peak season is the short summer window from June to August, when the weather is warmest and ger camps and national parks are in full operation. July is the busiest month, coinciding with the Naadam Festival in early-to-mid July – Mongolia’s most important national celebration of wrestling, horse racing and archery – which brings higher prices, busier hotels in Ulaanbaatar and a lively, festive atmosphere. The shoulder months of late May, early June and September offer cooler weather and fewer travellers, though ger camps may begin to close from late September.
In China, domestic travel surges around the two main national holidays – Chinese New Year (usually January or February) and Golden Week (early October) – when transport hubs and tourist sites become very busy and accommodation can be limited or more expensive. Where possible our itineraries avoid these periods.
Apps to Download
Connectivity differs greatly between the two legs, so prepare for both before you travel.
In Mongolia, common apps and services work normally, but coverage is limited across the remote Gobi and steppe. Useful apps include Google Translate (the lens function is handy for signs and menus, and Mongolian is now supported), Google Maps with offline maps downloaded, and Maps.me as a backup with detailed offline coverage of rural Mongolia. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp to communicate with other group members while on tour.
Internet use in China is heavily restricted, and many commonly used apps and websites – including Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook – are blocked. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is needed to access these services and must be downloaded before you arrive in China, as VPN websites are also blocked once inside the country. Other useful apps to download before travel include Baidu Maps or MAPS.ME for navigation, Pleco or Google Translate (with Chinese saved for offline use), WeChat for messaging and payments, Trip.com for train schedules, and DiDi for transport. Download key apps and offline content before departure.
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our trips. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-trip cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.
Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.
Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.
Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations
We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.
Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.
Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping trips, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.
Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your trip.
Please note that power outages can occasionally occur in Mongolia, particularly in remote regions. Guests who require a CPAP machine are advised to bring a unit with an extra battery to ensure uninterrupted use, especially during the one-night stay at the Khongor Sand Dunes camp.
Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Travelling in a Group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
Coach Transportation
The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.
While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries, we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.
Staying Connected
In China we also recommend downloading WeChat and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.
Mongolia is remote, and reliable connectivity is something to plan around rather than rely on.
In Ulaanbaatar: mobile coverage is good and the hotel offers Wi-Fi. International roaming, an eSIM or a local SIM bought at the airport will all work well.In the Gobi and central steppe: mobile signal is patchy to non-existent. Some ger camps offer limited Wi-Fi in the main dining yurt, but speeds are slow and connections drop. Expect stretches of two to three days with no calls, messages or internet. The Gobi Erdene camp at Khongor Sand Dunes runs on generator power (7am–11pm only).
Before you go:Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
This is a Land Only package.
This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination.
