Tour Suitability
Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here:
https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information
You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.
We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.
Pace
This tour category is Lively.
Our lively tours are faster paced typically including full sightseeing days, some early starts, longer driving days and a number of 1 night hotel stays - perfect for those eager to maximise each moment and cover more ground.
Activity and Mobility
This tour is categorised as: 4 out of 5 - Active
Our Active tours involve regular, longer periods of movement and are best suited to travellers with good fitness and mobility. Expect sustained walking on varied terrain including cobblestones, gravel and uneven ground, with noticeable inclines and occasional light hikes.
Mobility & Accessibility
Activity level: Moderate, with some challenging sections. This tour is not a trekking tour, but Mongolia’s remote landscapes mean travellers should be comfortable with uneven ground, unpaved paths, basic rural facilities, and getting in and out of 4WD-style vehicles. Most sightseeing walks are manageable for travellers with good general mobility, however a few activities require more effort and can be skipped if needed.
Typical walking distances:
Walking distances vary by day. Most days involve short to moderate walking, generally between 500 metres and 4 km, often broken up across the day. The longest walking days are usually:
Some shorter activities are more physically demanding due to the terrain, especially soft sand, rocky ridges or steep steps.
Terrain overview:
This itinerary covers four main environments: Ulaanbaatar city, the Gobi Desert, the central steppe and Terelj National Park.
More demanding activities and sites:
Some sections require extra care and may not be suitable for all travellers:
Accommodation:
Accommodation includes a city hotel in Ulaanbaatar and traditional ger camps in the countryside.
You’ll stay in comfortable twin-share gers throughout the journey, with ensuite facilities included on Days 4–7 and 9–10.
On Days 3 and 8, camps have a limited number of ensuite gers, which are allocated fairly on a random basis. To ensure a balanced experience, travellers who stay in a standard ger with shared facilities on Day 3 will be prioritised for an ensuite ger on Day 8.
Shared bathroom facilities are clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located close to the gers, offering hot showers and Western-style toilets
CPAP and power access:
The Ulaanbaatar hotel has standard power outlets in guest rooms. Mongolia uses 220V/50Hz power, commonly with Type C and Type E outlets, so travellers should bring a suitable travel adaptor.
In ger camps, power supply can vary and outages may occur. At some camps, electricity may only be available during certain hours and may not reliably support overnight CPAP use. Travellers who rely on a CPAP machine should bring a suitable portable battery pack and advise Inspiring Vacations before departure.
Transport and vehicle access:
Travel in remote areas is generally by Japanese or Korean 4WD-style minivans such as Mitsubishi Delica, Hyundai Starex or similar. These vehicles are suited to Mongolia’s road conditions but are not wheelchair accessible. They usually have a high step-in height, no ramps or wheelchair lifts, and limited space for mobility equipment.
Travellers should be able to climb in and out of vehicles regularly. Roads in the Gobi and countryside may be unsealed, bumpy and dusty, with long periods spent travelling between destinations.
Wheelchair accessibility:
This tour is not suitable for travellers who are fully wheelchair dependent. Ulaanbaatar has some partially accessible sites, and the Chinggis Khaan Museum is the most accessible inclusion, but the Gobi Desert, central steppe, ger camps and Terelj National Park are not designed for wheelchair access.
Travellers with mild mobility limitations may be able to participate with adjustments, but this should be assessed before booking.
Opt-out flexibility:
Several activities can be adjusted or skipped without preventing travellers from enjoying the overall tour experience. On Gobi days, vehicle support is generally available, meaning travellers can return to or remain with the vehicle if needed.
Examples include:
Health and medical considerations:
Mongolia is a remote destination, and medical facilities outside Ulaanbaatar are limited. Travellers with medical conditions should speak with their doctor before travelling and ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance, including emergency evacuation cover.
Travellers should bring any required medication, spare supplies, a personal first-aid kit and any mobility aids they require, as repairs or replacement equipment may not be available in remote areas.
Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability and where required, supporting documentation may be requested to ensure that we are comfortable that you will enjoy your tour.

Exclusions
Getting Around
While touring Mongolia, you will be travelling in private Japanese 4WD-style vans (such as the Mitsubishi Delica or Hyundai Starex), carrying up to 7 passengers per vehicle. Larger groups will travel in a small convoy of vans, with your group rejoining at each stop. These vehicles are chosen specifically for Mongolia's terrain — coaches are not suitable for the unpaved tracks of the Gobi and central steppe.Due to the remote nature of this itinerary, drives between regions can be long, ranging from approximately 2 to 8 hours, and roads are often unpaved, rough or washboard in places. Driving times are estimates only and can be affected by road and weather conditions.
For longer journeys, comfort stops will be made along the way where you can freshen up, stretch your legs and, where available, purchase refreshments. In more remote areas, facilities at comfort stops can be very basic and you should be prepared for a roadside stop with no formal toilets. Lunches on driving days are typically taken at local restaurants in regional towns or, in remote stretches, packed by the camp.
Wi-Fi and charging outlets are not available in the vans, so we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Accommodation Details
This tour features a mix of a 4-star city hotel in Ulaanbaatar and traditional ger camps across the Gobi and central Mongolia. Each accommodation has been carefully chosen to reflect both the comforts travellers expect in the city and the authentic experience of staying in a Mongolian ger out on the steppe and in the desert. Our team continuously reviews and updates our selections, incorporating customer feedback to guarantee that every property is well-suited to the tour and offers a memorable stay.
A traditional Mongolian ger (yurt) is a round, felt-lined tent that has been used by nomads for centuries. Each camp is made up of a cluster of gers and a central dining yurt. Gers are heated by a wood stove and feature twin beds with bedding provided. Towels are also supplied — simply bring your own personal toiletries. Power supply, signal and Wi-Fi at ger camps is limited and can be intermittent. Only the Gobi Erdene camp at the Khongor Sand Dunes does not have 24-hour electricity due to its remote location. The camp operates on generator power, with electricity available daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Please note that power outages can occasionally occur in Mongolia, particularly in remote regions.
A limited number of ensuite gers are available at two camps on the itinerary and these are allocated fairly on a random basis. Travellers in a standard ger on the first of these nights will be given priority for an ensuite ger on the second. Shared bathroom facilities include hot showers and Western-style toilets.
Packing Essentials
Mongolia's continental climate, remote landscapes and traditional ger camps call for thoughtful packing. We recommend bringing the following:
Climate
Mongolia has an extreme continental climate, with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. The country is known for clear blue skies, with around 250 sunny days a year, but conditions can change quickly. Day-to-night temperature variation can be significant even in summer.
May — One of the more comfortable months to travel. Daytime temperatures are mild (10–20°C), though evenings can still drop to 0–5°C. Occasional rain, snow and dust storms are possible, which can make unpaved paths and rocky terrain slippery. Snow is unlikely but not impossible in early May.
June — Warm and generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures of 20–25°C in Ulaanbaatar and higher in the Gobi. The rainy season begins in late June around the Naadam Festival, bringing occasional sudden downpours. Wet conditions can make rocky trails such as Khavtsgait (Day 7) and the sand dune surfaces (Day 5) more challenging.
July — Peak summer, with warm days (often 25–30°C, hotter in the Gobi) and pleasant evenings. This is also the wettest month, with short but heavy afternoon thunderstorms common. The Naadam Festival (11–13 July) is a cultural highlight.
August — The hottest month, but generally dry. Daytime temperatures in the Gobi can exceed 30°C, with cooler, pleasant mornings and evenings. The sand dune climb (Day 5) is significantly more demanding in the heat, so this activity is best done in the evening after dinner. Occasional heavy rainfall can make rocky and unpaved terrain slippery, and ger camp dirt paths can become waterlogged.
September — A favourite for many travellers. Days are mild (15–20°C) and skies are clear, with the steppe taking on golden autumn colours. Nights cool quickly, often dropping close to freezing, particularly in the desert and at ger camps.
October — Cooler and drier, with crisp daytime temperatures (5–15°C) and cold nights that can dip below zero. Early snow is possible, especially later in the month.
What to pack: Regardless of season, we recommend packing layers, strong sun protection, a warm jacket for evenings, and staying well hydrated throughout your tour.
Currency and ATMs
The official currency of Mongolia is the Mongolian Tögrög (MNT), also written as Tugrik. ATMs are widely available in Ulaanbaatar and accept most major international cards, and credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the capital. Outside Ulaanbaatar, ATMs are limited or unavailable and card payments are rarely accepted — so we strongly recommend withdrawing or exchanging enough MNT before leaving the capital to cover meals not included, optional activities, tips and souvenirs for the rest of the tour.
US dollars are a useful backup. Clean, undamaged USD notes can be exchanged easily at banks or your hotel in Ulaanbaatar, and are sometimes accepted for larger purchases in the capital. Outside Ulaanbaatar, however, the only accepted currency is Tögrög. When exchanging or spending USD, make sure all notes appear new and unmarked — any note that looks worn, torn or aged will be treated with suspicion and may be refused.
We recommend carrying a combination of cash and a credit card, using the card for larger purchases where it's accepted.
Food and Allergies
Traditional Mongolian cuisine is hearty and shaped by the country's nomadic herding heritage. Expect plenty of meat — mostly mutton, beef and goat — alongside dairy, root vegetables, noodles and dumplings. Iconic dishes include buuz (steamed meat dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pastries), tsuivan (stir-fried noodles with meat and vegetables) and a wide variety of dairy products such as aaruul (dried curds) and airag (fermented mare's milk). On the day with the nomadic family, you'll have the chance to try your hand at preparing a traditional dish for lunch.
In Ulaanbaatar, the dining scene is far more varied, with international restaurants ranging from Korean and Japanese to Italian, Indian and modern European, alongside contemporary Mongolian fusion spots. Out in the Gobi and at ger camps, meals are simpler and home-style, generally including soup, a main dish of meat with rice or noodles, salad and tea.
For travellers with dietary restrictions, vegetarian and vegan options are limited outside Ulaanbaatar but can usually be arranged in advance, particularly at ger camps, if notified ahead of departure. Strict gluten-free requirements can be challenging in remote areas. Please advise our Customer Support Team of any allergies or dietary needs well before departure.
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you'll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings in Mongolia. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide or Local Guide will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour. For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Guide will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.
Local Customs
Mongolian culture is shaped by centuries of nomadic tradition and Tibetan Buddhism, and travellers will find a strong code of hospitality and respect throughout the country. When visiting a ger, never step on the threshold (always step over it), do not whistle inside, and accept food or drink with your right hand, supporting your right elbow with your left hand if the dish is heavy. It is polite to at least taste anything you are offered, even if you do not finish it.
At Buddhist monasteries, walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, remove your hat before entering temples, and do not point your feet at altars, monks or religious images. Photography may be restricted inside temple buildings — please follow your guide's instructions and ask before photographing monks or local people. Pointing with a single finger is considered impolite; gesture with an open hand instead.
Mongolians generally have a calm and reserved manner with strangers, and warming up to visitors takes a little time. A friendly greeting, patience and respect go a long way.
Dress Code
Dress in Mongolia is generally practical and casual, with a strong focus on staying warm and protected from sun and wind. In Ulaanbaatar, smart casual clothing is suitable for hotels and restaurants. Out on tour, comfortable layered clothing is the priority — lightweight shirts for the warmer middle of the day, a fleece or warm layer for cool mornings and evenings, and a windproof and waterproof outer shell.
When visiting Buddhist monasteries, please dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and remove your hat before entering temple buildings. Sandals are best avoided at religious sites and on hikes; sturdy walking shoes are recommended. There is no expectation of formal dress at any point on this tour.
Responsible Dining
Avoid consuming endangered species or items harvested unsustainably. Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.
Tipping
A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package and is entirely at your discretion.
Tipping is not compulsory in Mongolia, but if you're happy with the service you've received, a small gratuity is always appreciated. It may not be customary at home, but it means a great deal to the people looking after you during your travels and is an established part of the tourism industry here. Tips can be given in MNT or USD, whichever is easier.
The following amounts are based on local norms and feedback from past travellers:
You are of course free to tip more or less based on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. A tip should reflect excellent service, not obligation.
Peak Travel Times
The peak travel season in Mongolia is the short summer window from June to August, when the weather is warmest, the steppe is at its greenest, and ger camps and national parks are in full operation. July is the busiest single month, coinciding with the Naadam Festival in early to mid-July — Mongolia's most important national celebration, featuring traditional wrestling, horse racing and archery. Visiting around Naadam can mean higher prices, busier hotels in Ulaanbaatar and a much more lively, festive atmosphere across the country.
The shoulder months of late May, early June and September offer cooler weather, fewer travellers and beautiful changing colours on the steppe, though ger camps may begin to close from late September and overnight temperatures drop significantly. Winter travel (November to March) is extremely cold, with temperatures regularly well below freezing, and is generally outside the operating season for this tour.
Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.
Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you'll have some free time to explore on your own. While your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.
Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate (the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs and menus, and Mongolian is now supported), Google Maps with offline maps downloaded for easy navigation without being reliant on Wi-Fi, and Maps.me as a backup with detailed offline coverage of rural Mongolia. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour.
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our trips. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-trip cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.
Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.
Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.
Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations
We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.
Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.
Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping trips, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.
Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your trip.
Please note that power outages can occasionally occur in Mongolia, particularly in remote regions. Guests who require a CPAP machine are advised to bring a unit with an extra battery to ensure uninterrupted use, especially during the one-night stay at the Khongor Sand Dunes camp.
Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Travelling in a Group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
Coach Transportation
The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.
While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries, we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.
Staying Connected
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
This is a Land Only package.
This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub.
