Welcome to Oslo. Despite its compact size, the Norwegian capital offers a wide range of experiences, from contemporary architecture to long-standing cultural traditions. Make your own way from the airport to your hotel and settle in.
The city is easy to explore on foot. Grünerløkka is known for its independent cafés and relaxed atmosphere, while the Barcode district showcases modern waterfront design. Art is central to Oslo’s identity, and the Munch Museum houses an extensive collection of works by famed Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Ekeberg Park combines outdoor art with elevated views across the city and fjord. For a broader insight into Norwegian history, the Bygdøy Peninsula is home to several museums, including the Norsk Folkemuseum, where traditional buildings and a preserved stave church illustrate life through the centuries.
This evening, meet your tour leader and fellow travellers for a welcome meeting and dinner at the hotel.
Special Information
Airport transfers are not included. Our transfer portal offers the option to book your airport transfers for an easier arrival experience (additional charges apply). Access to this portal will be available through your Traveller Hub once your booking is confirmed.
Hotel check-in time is at 3pm. If arriving prior to this, you will be able to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.
This morning after breakfast, board your private coach and meet your local guide for a city sightseeing tour. This guided introduction to Oslo takes you past some of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks.
Visit Vigeland Sculpture Park, home to more than 200 sculptures set within Frogner Park. Continue to the Oslo Opera House, where contemporary architecture rises directly from the waterfront, and to Holmenkollen Ski Jump, a symbol of Norway’s deep-rooted skiing tradition. The tour offers a broader perspective on the city, from historic districts to modern developments, while your guide provides context on Oslo’s culture and daily life.
The afternoon and evening are at leisure. You may wish to revisit any highlights from the tour, explore a different neighbourhood, or enjoy one of the city’s many restaurants for dinner tonight.

For your upcoming Norway ‘s Southern Fjords journey, please prepare an overnight bag with everything you’ll need for the night in Flåm, as your main luggage will be transported separately. Ensure all essentials like medication, and valuables are kept with you in your hand luggage. Your luggage will be transported to the hotel in Bergen.
After breakfast at the hotel, take a short walk to Oslo Central Station to begin the renowned Norway’s Southern Fjords (Norway in a Nutshell) journey. Travel by train to Myrdal, passing through farmland, forests and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery as you climb inland. At Myrdal, change trains for the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. The descent towards the fjord is striking, with waterfalls, steep valley walls and wide views unfolding along the route.
On arrival in Flåm, walk the short distance to your hotel and check in. The afternoon is at leisure to explore this small fjord-side village at your own pace, perhaps along the waterfront or into the surrounding landscape. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening.
Inspiring Highlights
Special Information
Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.
After breakfast, depart Flåm and begin today’s fjord journey. Cruise through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest arms of the Sognefjord. Sheer mountain walls rise from the water, waterfalls thread down the rock face and small farms cling to the slopes, offering a sense of scale that is distinctly Norwegian.
On arrival in Gudvangen, continue by coach through a valley landscape shaped by rivers and cascading falls. Travel onward to Voss, where you board the train for the final stretch to Bergen. Once you arrive in Bergen, transfer by private coach to your hotel and check in.
The remainder of the evening is at leisure. Bergen’s harbour area offers a selection of restaurants where you can enjoy dinner at your own leisure tonight.
Inspiring Highlights
Special Information
Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.
After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walking tour of Bergen, Norway’s historic gateway to the fjords. Stroll through the UNESCO-listed Bryggen, where colourful wooden warehouses line the harbour and reflect the city’s Hanseatic heritage. Continue to St Mary’s Church and Håkon’s Hall, both reminders of Bergen’s importance during the medieval period. Your tour concludes with a return journey on the Fløibanen funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen, where you can enjoy wide views across the city, surrounding mountains and open sea.
Later, transfer to the Hurtigruten terminal for check-in and embarkation. In the evening, your ship departs Bergen and you begin your northbound voyage along the Norwegian coast. Dinner tonight is served on board.
Inspiring Highlights
Wake early as the ship sails through Nordfjord near Torvik, where steep mountains and sheltered waters signal your continued journey north. Later, pass Stadlandet and West Cape before approaching Ålesund, one of Norway’s most distinctive coastal towns.
Rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904, Ålesund is known for its decorative façades, curved lines and detailed stonework. Pastel-coloured buildings line the harbour, and towers, turrets and ornamented windows reflect a period of confident design. You will have much of the day to explore at your own pace. You may wish to wander through the town centre, visit a local museum, or climb the steps to Mount Aksla for wide views across the archipelago and surrounding peaks. The Atlantic Sea Park is another option, offering insight into marine life along this stretch of coast.
In the evening, the ship calls at Molde. From the water, you may catch a glimpse of the Molde Panorama, a sweeping chain of mountain peaks rising across the fjord.
Inspiring Highlights
Arrive in Trondheim early in the morning, giving you time to explore Norway’s first capital. Founded in 997 by Viking king Olav Tryggvason, Trondheim blends medieval heritage with the energy of a modern university city.
At the heart of the city stands Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s national sanctuary and an important pilgrimage site. Its Gothic façade and intricate stonework dominate the skyline and reflect centuries of history. Cross the red-painted Gamle Bybro over the River Nid and enter Bakklandet, the old Hanseatic district, where colourful wooden warehouses on stilts now house cafés and small shops. For wider views over the city and fjord, walk up to Kristiansten Fortress.
In the afternoon, the ship resumes its northbound voyage. Sailing northwest, you pass the Kjeungskjær Lighthouse before continuing towards Rørvik.
Inspiring Highlights
Early this morning, the ship crosses the Arctic Circle, marking your entry into Arctic Norway. The moment is traditionally celebrated on board with a light-hearted ceremony that signals the start of a new chapter in the voyage. In winter, daylight is brief and the quality of light changes quickly. Above the Arctic Circle, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights increase, particularly on clear evenings when the sky is dark and open.
Later in the morning, the ship calls at Ørnes, close to Svartisen, Norway’s second-largest glacier. Continue to Bodø, Northern Norway’s largest city in the region, framed by the Børvass peaks and exposed to the open sea.
In the afternoon, enter the Lofoten archipelago. The dramatic mountain chain known as the Lofoten Wall rises sharply from the water, forming a striking horizon line. Calls at Stamsund and later Svolvær reveal a landscape shaped by the cod fisheries, where traditional rorbuer stand along the harbour and fishing ships gather in season.
Inspiring Highlights
The ship calls at Harstad in the early morning, offering the option of a quiet walk ashore before continuing north. The voyage then takes you to Finnsnes, gateway to the island of Senja, before arriving in Tromsø, often referred to as the Arctic capital.
You will have several hours to explore Tromsø independently. The compact city centre is easy to navigate, with shops, cafés and restaurants clustered around the harbour. Polaria offers insight into Arctic research and marine life, while Mack Brewery and the historic pub Ølhallen provide a taste of local brewing traditions. Across the water stands the striking Arctic Cathedral, its angular form and stained-glass window reflecting the Nordic light.
In the early evening, the ship departs Tromsø and sails north towards Skjervøy, passing the jagged peaks of the Lyngen Alps rising directly from the sea.
Inspiring Highlights
During the early morning the ship stops at Hammerfest and Havøysund before arriving in Honningsvåg, one of the northernmost towns on the Norwegian mainland. Honningsvåg serves as the gateway to the North Cape, where a globe monument stands on the cliffs high above the Barents Sea, marking the northern edge of continental Europe.
Continuing north, the ship approaches Kjøllefjord. Near the entrance to the harbour, look for the distinctive rock formation Finnkirka, an ancient sacred site for the Sámi people. By evening, the ship reaches Mehamn. In February and March, wooden racks known as hjell may be lined with drying cod, part of a fishing tradition that remains central to life along this coast. Later, the ship sails past Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost mainland lighthouse in the world, en route to Berlevåg.
Inspiring Highlights
After a final breakfast on board, arrive in Kirkenes and disembark, marking the end of the sea voyage and the beginning of the land journey into Finnish Lapland.
From the quay, continue by coach to the Snowhotel Kirkenes for the included King Crab Experience. The excursion begins with an introduction to the Arctic king crab, offering insight into its habitat and importance along this stretch of coast. Afterwards, enjoy a tasting featuring freshly prepared king crab, served in a simple, seasonal style.
Later, continue by coach across the border into Finland, travelling through open Arctic landscapes and forested terrain. By late afternoon, arrive in Saariselkä, a small village set deep within Finnish Lapland. Check in to your hotel before dinner in the restaurant. Tonight is at your leisure.
Inspiring Highlights
Special Information
Your travel time today will be approximately 5.5 hours.
This morning, travel to Inari, widely regarded as the cultural centre of Finland’s Sámi community. Here, traditions remain closely connected to the land, lakes and forests that shape daily life in the north.
Accompanied by a local guide, spend the day learning about Sámi history and contemporary culture. At the Siida, the Sámi Museum and Nature Centre, exhibitions explore reindeer herding, seasonal rhythms and the deep relationship between people and the Arctic environment. Set beside Lake Inari, the museum’s location reflects how closely culture and landscape are intertwined.
Later, head out onto frozen Lake Inari by snowmobile sleigh and try your hand at traditional ice fishing, a quiet, hands-on experience that offers a glimpse into everyday northern life. During the excursion, enjoy lunch at a local wilderness hotel, where regional dishes are served in warm surroundings. Return to Saariselkä in the afternoon. Dinner tonight is at your leisure.
Inspiring Highlights
Special Information
Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.
Today is a day at your leisure in Saariselkä. This small village sits on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, where forests and open fell landscapes stretch far beyond the last houses. You may choose to explore independently, take a gentle walk along the marked trails in the surrounding area, or simply relax at the hotel.
In the evening, gather for dinner at the hotel before setting out on a guided aurora hike. Accompanied by your guide, you will walk at a gentle pace into the surrounding landscape. The trail is accessible and suitable for all abilities, leading to a sheltered aurora hut where you can warm up and learn more about the science and stories behind the Northern Lights. Away from artificial light, this quiet setting offers an ideal vantage point to watch for the aurora. Afterwards, return to the hotel later in the evening.
Inspiring Highlights
After breakfast, depart Saariselkä and travel south towards Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. En route, pause in Sodankylä for a short stop to view its historic Old Church, a simple wooden structure that reflects Lapland’s rural heritage.
Continue to the Santa Claus Village, located on the Arctic Circle. Here, you will have time to explore at your own pace, cross the Arctic Circle line, browse local shops, or simply take in the atmosphere of this well-known landmark. Lunch is at your own arrangement.
In the afternoon, travel onward to Sinettä and check in at the Arctic SnowHotel and Glass Igloos. This evening, enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant before settling into your Glass Igloo accommodation. The heated glass roof offers uninterrupted views of the night sky from the comfort of your bed. Tonight is at your leisure.
Inspiring Highlights
Enjoy a relaxed morning before departing for one of today’s highlights, a husky safari in the forests of Finnish Lapland. At the kennels, learn how the dogs are trained and cared for, and get an insight into the preparation required to keep them fit for the Arctic environment.
Then set out on a guided husky ride through the landscape. Depending on conditions, the journey takes place by sled or cart, but the route and overall experience remain the same. This is not a self-driving tour, allowing you to focus on the scenery and the energy of the dogs as they move along the trail. Following the safari, warm up with a soup lunch before spending some time with the huskies.
Later, continue to Rovaniemi and check in to your hotel. Tonight is at your leisure.
Inspiring Highlights
Special Information
Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.
Please note that the sleds will only be used if there is enough snow. Otherwise, pulled carts will be used. The route and experience remain the same regardless of conditions.
This morning after breakfast, transfer to Rovaniemi railway station for your train journey to Helsinki. As the train departs Lapland, the landscape gradually shifts from Arctic forest and open fells to lakes, farmland and small towns, offering a final view of Finland’s changing scenery.
You will arrive in Helsinki in the late afternoon and make the short walk to your hotel. Finland’s capital presents a different pace, with broad boulevards, neoclassical architecture and a strong maritime character shaped by its position on the Baltic Sea.
This evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner at the hotel. It is a chance to reflect on the experiences shared over the past 16 days, from Norway’s fjords and Arctic coastline to the winter landscapes of Finnish Lapland.
We hope this journey from the fjords of Norway to the winter wonderlands of Finnish Lapland has been one to remember.

We recommend you wait until you receive your final documentation to book transfers as your start and end hotels will only be confirmed at this point. Please note that if you are choosing to book an independent airport transfer service, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise, nor can they resolve any concerns that you may have with your transfer service.
To make your way to your hotel from the airport, there are various connections by train or limousine bus. The airport information desks can provide helpful advice, too. Most destinations offer ride-share services, such as Uber or Didi.
If you’re having any problems finding the hotel, please ring the hotel directly or you can phone our customer support team for on-tour assistance.
Tour Suitability
Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your trip and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your trip. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here:
https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information
You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.
We need your passport information to get everything ready for your trip so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while traveling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.
Child Policy
Children must be 5 years old or above and share a room with parents at all times. Children are charged the same price as adults.
Pace
This tour is rated Steady
Our steady tours offer a good mix of guided sightseeing and personal free time. With a combination of 2-3 night stays and occasional 1 night stops in key locations, this pace allows for deeper exploration while minimising long travel days.Activity level: Relaxed to moderate. The tour combines coach travel, cruise sailing, train journeys and short walking excursions. Most sightseeing involves gentle walking with some optional longer walks.
Mobility & Accessibility
This tour is rated 3 out of 5 - Balanced
Our Balanced tours involve a moderate level of physical activity and are designed to suit the majority of travellers. Be prepared for walking on varied surfaces, which may include cobblestones, gravel paths, and noticeable inclines common in historic towns and natural areas. You must be confident on your feet and capable of navigating multiple flights of stairs and uneven ground without assistance to fully participate.
Typical walking: Around 1–4 km on sightseeing days. Several days involve minimal walking, particularly during the cruise and travel days between Finland’s regions.
Optional longer walks:
Terrain and key walks
Cities and towns: Mostly flat pavements in Oslo, Bergen and Helsinki. Bergen’s Bryggen area includes cobblestones. Ålesund involves some steps if climbing to the Mount Aksla viewpoint.
Cruise ports: Short walks from the ship to port areas. Gangways may be steep. Tromsø and Trondheim are compact and walkable.
Finnish Lapland: Snow-covered paths and trails. The aurora hike follows an accessible route to a sheltered hut. The husky safari does not require walking. Santa Claus Village is flat and manageable.
Winter conditions: Ice, compacted snow and slippery surfaces are common throughout the tour. Sturdy, insulated footwear with good grip is essential.
Mobility & accessibility
Best suited to: Travellers comfortable with short, stop-and-start walking on potentially icy surfaces, navigating ship gangways and stairs, and spending time outdoors in extreme cold.
Opt-out options: Many excursions can be skipped. Passengers can remain on the ship during port calls, stay at the hotel during the aurora hike, or choose not to participate in the husky safari. The Glass Igloo stay is part of the standard itinerary.
Wheelchairs: The Hurtigruten ship has some accessible cabins and facilities, but several land-based activities and hotels may not be fully wheelchair accessible. Icy and snowy terrain in Finnish Lapland presents significant challenges for wheelchair users. Please reach out to Inspiring Vacations directly to discuss wheelchair use.
Hotels, transport and climate
Hotels: Hotels vary in style from city hotels in Oslo and Helsinki to wilderness lodges in Finnish Lapland. Lift access varies by property. The Glass Igloo is a purpose-built accommodation with heated glass roof. All accommodations have adequate power outlets for CPAP machines.
Transport: Private coaches, trains, the Hurtigruten cruise ship, snowmobile sleighs and husky sleds are used throughout. Walking to and from vehicles is generally short, with regular comfort stops on longer coach journeys.
Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability and where required, supporting documentation may be requested to ensure that we are comfortable that you will enjoy your tour.

Getting Around
Winter travel in Scandinavia and Iceland offers stunning landscapes but also presents challenges. Expect cold temperatures, abundant snowfall, and icy conditions. Roads can be slippery and may impact getting to places. Public transportation, like buses and trains, generally operates as scheduled, but delays due to weather are possible. Air travel might also be affected by severe weather.
While exploring Norway, Finland and Iceland, some days will feature longer drives as you journey through stunning landscapes and connect iconic destinations. Though these travel days can feel lengthy, your comfortable coach, scenic views, and planned breaks will help make the journey more manageable.
In Norway, you will travel by private coach, the Flåm Railway, the Bergen Railway, and the Hurtigruten coastal cruise. For the Norwegian train journeys, your train documentation will be given to you on tour by your tour leader.
In Finland, you will travel by private coach and the train from Rovaniemi to Helsinki (approximately 9 hours). Your train documentation will be given to you on tour by your tour leader.
In Iceland, you will travel by coach with local guides. The flight from Helsinki to Reykjavik is included and will be unescorted. Your included flight allows one checked bag up to 23kg, and one 7kg carry-on, with options to increase your luggage allowance at the airport if needed.
Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don’t just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel’s typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Our tours in Norway, Finland and Iceland utilise comfortable business hotels conveniently located for easy access to transportation and restaurants. Keep in mind that Nordic design emphasises clean lines and functionality, so rooms tend to be cosy compared to what you might be accustomed to in other regions.
While some amenities like tea kettles may not be standard, hotels provide comfortable beds and essential toiletries. The focus is on a restful night’s sleep after a day of adventure. If you require specific amenities, it may be best to plan ahead or to speak to hotel staff directly to see how they can assist you.
This tour includes a feature stay at the Arctic SnowHotel and Glass Igloos in Sinettä, where you will spend one night in a heated Glass Igloo with uninterrupted views of the night sky.
For further information on your Norwegian Coastal Cruise, please see Cruise Details.
Packing Essensials
Clothing Considerations
To ensure your comfort we suggest packing base and mid layers, along with a substantial winter jacket, a wool or fleece hat, balaclava/buff, gloves, a woolly jumper, scarf, and winter boots. Keep in mind the layering principle: it is more effective to wear several thin layers than a few thick ones.
In exceptionally cold conditions, consider wearing two pairs of gloves – a thick pair of mitts (as mitts keep your hands warmer by not separating the fingers) and a thin pair of gloves underneath for finger dexterity. For those susceptible to cold extremities, consider acquiring carbon hand and foot warmers, typically found in reputable outdoor stores.
Luggage Requirements
We want to ensure your journey with us is as enjoyable as possible. We understand that travelling during the winter season may pose challenges. Given you are responsible for handling your own luggage throughout the trip, please be aware that moving luggage in snow or icy conditions can be challenging. For this reason, and to ensure that we are not exceeding the overall luggage allowances on our ground transportation, we recommend packing light (not exceeding 20kg per person) and being prepared for such conditions.
Climate
Be prepared to embrace the cold and darkness that defines winter in these regions. Temperatures can dip to -15°C (5°F) or lower, with snow blanketing the landscape. Limited daylight hours, especially in northern Norway, mean adjusting activities and clothing accordingly. Be prepared and patient for potential delays due to unpredictable winter weather.
Norway: Winter is beautiful but very cold, with temperatures ranging from -5°C to -20°C, colder in the inland and northern regions. Coastal areas, influenced by the Gulf Stream, are milder but still chilly. Northern Norway experiences polar night, with no sunlight for weeks. Winter brings snow-covered landscapes, perfect for viewing the Northern Lights.
Finland: Winter is cold and snowy, with temperatures ranging from -5°C to -30°C. The north experiences the coldest weather and polar night, where the sun does not rise for weeks. Snow covers much of the country from November to April, offering opportunities for winter sports and viewing the Northern Lights.
Iceland: Weather is as dynamic as its landscape. Known for its rapid changes, you can experience four seasons in one day. Even in summer, chilly temperatures and rain are common. Winters are harsh, with snow and ice covering much of the country. Packing layers is essential, as you will likely need to adjust your clothing throughout the day. Wind is another factor to consider, so windproof gear is highly recommended.
Currency and ATMs
Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK), Finland uses the Euro (EUR), and Iceland uses the Icelandic Króna (ISK).
Throughout Norway and Finland, credit cards are the preferred method of payment for most transactions. Visa and Mastercard are the most universally accepted. You will be able to use them for hotels, restaurants, shops, and public transportation. While credit cards are widely accepted, carrying some local currency can be helpful for smaller purchases at markets, cafes, or public restrooms that might not accept cards.
In Iceland, credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small shops and rural areas. Carrying cash is rarely necessary but can be useful for small markets or tips.
You will find ATMs in most cities, towns, and tourist areas throughout all three countries, though they are rare in the north of Finland. Look for signs with international networks like Visa Plus, Mastercard Cirrus, or Maestro.
Be aware that your home bank and the ATM operator may charge you fees for international withdrawals. Check with your bank before your tour to understand their foreign transaction fees.
Food and Allergies
The Nordic region and Iceland offer a delicious culinary adventure, with fresh seafood, hearty stews, and delightful pastries. However, if you have food allergies or dietary requirements, it is important to be aware of a few things.
While major cities and tourist destinations are increasingly accommodating dietary needs, some traditional dishes may present challenges. Rye bread, a staple across the region, is high in gluten. Dairy features prominently in many dishes, from creamy sauces to cheeses like Jarlsberg and Brunost. The good news is that awareness of dietary restrictions is growing. Many restaurants offer gluten-free options, and lactose-free milk alternatives are becoming more common. When making reservations, communicate your dietary needs. Travel with a phrasebook or translation app to help you explain your requirements in restaurants.
Iceland offers a unique culinary experience, with fresh seafood and local ingredients taking centre stage. Specialities include lamb, Arctic char, and langoustine. Local supermarkets stock a growing selection of gluten-free and dairy-free products.
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you will enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings. While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what, and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your tour.
While our leaders will assist you where they can, there may be some included meals that are decided in advance and therefore cannot be altered or modified for different diets. For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.
Local Customs
It is always a good idea to learn something about local customs before you travel. The Nordic region is known for its friendly and relaxed culture, but a few social customs can help you blend in seamlessly. Respecting personal space is key – queues tend to be orderly with space between people, and greetings are often casual. While tipping is not mandatory, rounding up a bill or leaving a small token of appreciation for exceptional service is always welcome.
Both Norway and Finland have a strong emphasis on hygge – a sense of cosiness and togetherness. Enjoy evenings spent relaxing by a fireplace or indulging in warm beverages.
Icelanders pride themselves on their respect for nature and its delicate ecosystems. It is essential to adhere to marked paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and practise responsible waste management. Additionally, Icelanders value personal space and quiet, especially in public areas. Respecting these customs will enhance your experience and contribute to preserving Iceland’s natural beauty.
Dress Code
When travelling in Norway, Finland and Iceland during winter, warmth and practicality are the priority. Layer up with thermal base layers, insulating mid layers, and a wind and waterproof outer shell. Sturdy, waterproof winter boots with good grip are essential for icy and snow-covered surfaces.
Casual, warm clothing is generally acceptable in hotels and restaurants across all three countries. There are no strict dress codes at most dining venues, though smart casual is appreciated at higher-end establishments. On the Hurtigruten cruise, dress is casual and practical – there is no formal night.
For the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, swimwear is required. Changing rooms and showers are provided on-site.
Responsible Dining
We support the protection of endangered species around the world. Although a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986, approximately 1,000 whales are still being killed every year. We do not visit places that serve whale meat on any of our tours, nor will your leader guide you to where it is offered.
Norway, Finland and Iceland prioritise sustainability, so be a responsible traveller by following designated trails, minimising waste, and opting for local, seasonal food options whenever possible. Traditional cuisine features fresh seafood, reindeer meat, and hearty stews. Vegetarian options might be limited, especially in smaller towns. In Iceland, consider choosing restaurants that prioritise local and seasonal produce to support sustainable practices.
Tipping
Tipping in the Nordic region is not compulsory; however, tips are much appreciated, especially as a reward for good service. Tips and gratuities are not included for this package and are discretionary. If you wish to reward good service, the suggested amounts are:
Peak Travel Times
Norway and Finland: The peak season for Northern Lights travel runs from late September through to March. The winter months (December–February) are the busiest, coinciding with the darkest skies and best aurora viewing conditions. Christmas and New Year are particularly popular. February and March offer slightly longer daylight hours while still providing excellent Northern Lights opportunities.
Iceland: Winter (November–March) is peak season for Northern Lights tourism. The summer months (June–August) attract visitors for the Midnight Sun and warmer weather. The shoulder seasons (September–October and April–May) offer a balance of fewer crowds and reasonable weather conditions.
Safety and Security
Scandinavia and Iceland are generally safe, but taking precautions is always wise. When exploring the outdoors, inform someone of your itinerary and expected return time. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and dress appropriately. Driving conditions can be challenging, especially in winter, so exercise caution and adhere to road signs. Respecting nature and local customs will also contribute to a safe and enjoyable trip.
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government’s advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your tour.
Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you will have some free time to explore on your own. While your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.
Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
Seismic Activity in Iceland
Iceland, a land of fire and ice, is renowned for its dynamic geological activity. While this creates breathtaking landscapes, it is essential to be aware of seismic activity when planning your trip.
Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate (the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus) and Google Maps with offline maps downloaded for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi. We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour.
We generally recommend that you download a reliable transportation app for the countries you are visiting in case you need to get around on your own:
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your trip! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our trips. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-trip cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.
We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.
If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.
Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.
Health, Wellness & Fitness Requirements
All travellers need to be in good physical health to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully to assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. If we find that you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.
Important Information for Customers with Mobility Limitations
We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire group, our tours are designed with a specific itinerary in mind. This may involve moderate walking, uneven terrain, or stairs. While some itinerary adjustments may not be possible, we'll do our best to find alternative solutions within the planned activities whenever possible.
Open communication helps us ensure your trip is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.
Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping trips, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.
Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your trip.
Documentation
Tour documentation is typically emailed to the lead passenger or your travel agent between 14-30 days before your scheduled departure. This will include your final hotel list.

Travelling in a Group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, please ensure that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire trip, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
Coach Transportation
The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.
While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries, we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.
For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.
Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance in doing so. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure. Purchasing a local SIM may be possible as a final option.
We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential trip information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
This is a Land Only package.
This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination. The function works like most general flight search engines allowing you to select your preferred airline, book different cabin classes (eg. Business class) and view flight durations and transit times to your destination.
The flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub once the following criteria has been met:
Visit our Flight Hub for more information on terms and conditions, amending your flights and information on luggage allowances.
