19 Day Patagonia & Antarctic Adventure

Welcome to Santiago, Chile! Here you will start your adventure down to Antarctica. Upon arrival at Santiago airport, please make your own way to the starting accommodation.

Santiago is the cosmopolitan capital and largest city of Chile. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. Santiago de Chile offers a variety of museums, events, theatres, restaurants, bars and cultural opportunities which makes it a great place to explore. A wonderful city to stroll on foot, each of the districts of the city have a distinct character and tone.

This morning, we will enjoy a day tour of Valparaiso. A historic port city, Valparaíso is known as the 'Jewel of the Pacific' and the cultural capital of Chile, with countless annual festivals and plenty of street artists and musicians. Its colourful houses are set on cobblestone alleyways in the hills that surround the city, lending it the feel of an urban amphitheatre. Because of its unique architecture and urban design, UNESCO declared the historic quarter of Valparaíso a World Heritage Site in 2003. The city’s system of funiculars, or cable railways, are also of note – in 1996 the World Monuments Fund declared the system one of the world’s 100 most endangered historical treasures.

On this tour, you will enjoy a walking tour of the city centre including a chance to visit the Pablo Neruda Museum. The funicular ride will give you amazing views and you will get a taste of the local cuisine with an included lunch at a local restaurant.

You will be in Santiago in the late afternoon for an evening at leisure.

After breakfast, a transfer will take you to the airport in time to make your flight to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival at Punta Arenas airport, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel in Puerto Natales. The drive itself takes around 2.5 - 3 hours. Upon arrival, check-in to your hotel with the rest of your day at leisure.

Puerto Natales was founded in 1911 and today it ́s one of the most important urban centres in Patagonia. Located in the north side of the region, between the Pacific Ocean and Argentina, the city has marvellous geography with different geographic formations such as valleys, fjords, archipelagos and millenary ice fields.

Today, you will visit the incredible  Torres del Paine National Park. The first stop is the Milodon Cave, a

remarkable cavern 200 metres long. A half-hour walk takes us into the cave, which was made famous by the discovery of seemingly fresh skin and bones of a prehistoric giant sloth known as a Milodon. In the same cave the remains of other extinct animals were found, including the dawn horse (Eohippus), a prehistoric cave bear, the Patagonian panther, and the saber-toothed tiger.

Then continue to Torres Del Paine, as we pass several estancias (ranches) and go from a steppe eco-

region towards dense forest. Along the way we may be able to see some of the local fauna, including many species of birds. We may also see guanacos, which are wild camelids related to the llama.

Torres Del Paine is world-famous for its dramatic granite towers, which give the park its name. These gigantic spires were carved by glacial ice many years ago. After entering the park you will be greeted with sceneries made up of lakes with intense colours, mountains covered in ice, and an array of local fauna. After lunch we continue to Lago Grey, where we will hike to a panoramic viewpoint to observe the glacier of the same name. The return of Puerto Natales may be via the same route, or on the alternate road that takes us past the picturesque lakes called Toro, Porteño, and Sofía.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the bus station to board the local bus to El Calafate. The land journey takes approximately 5.5 hours, during the transfer you will cross the border between Chile and Argentina so please have your passports on board with you.

Once you arrive into El Calafate, you will be met with your local guide and transferred to your hotel. After check in, there rest of the evening is at your own leisure. The city, nicknamed Calafate, is located on the southern shore of Lake Argentino. It is a gateway to the land of the glaciers.

Today we go on a full day's guided visit to view the stunning Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most

spectacular sights in Patagonia. If Patagonia is synonymous with jaw-droppingly beautiful mountain scenery, then the Perito Moreno Glacier certainly doesn't disappoint. This incredible glacier is the highlight of the southern region of Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, a spectacular wall of ice over 60m tall above the water and 5 kilometres wide. One of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating, you can stand on one of the many catwalks and marvel at the glacier, listening to it creak and watching as enormous chunks crash into the water. It's also possible to take a short boat trip out onto the lake in order to get up even closer to the face of the glacier itself (not included – optional activity).

To day you also have the option to take a 2 hour ice walking excursion (this activity may not be available from April to September). Needless to say, it will be cold! Please ensure you take plenty of warm clothes for this trip - particularly in the winter months. Return back to your hotel in El Calafate for an evening at leisure.

We depart El Calafate to start our incredible journey down to the bottom of the earth, Antarctica. We start with flying down to Ushuaia, known as the gateway to Antarctica and has become a significant city in Argentina due to the economy provided by thousands of people who travel to Antarctica every year from its port.

Ushuaia boasts many shops, museums, restaurants and cafes that you can enjoy before your voyage. This Argentine town is the ideal gateway for you to explore the southern extent of Patagonia while preparing for your adventure ahead. If you feel adventurous, the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park offers plenty of outdoor activities.

Following your embarkation onto the Ocean Endeavour in the late afternoon, begin your Antarctic journey south, passing through the infamous Beagle Channel. Named after the famed ship on which Charles Darwin voyaged, the channel presents great photo opportunities of landscapes and seabirds.

Famed for its wild nature, the Drake Passage is unpredictable and always changing. Be sure to spend some time out on one of the Ocean Endeavour's many outer decks soaking up the fresh sea air and feeling the breeze of the roaring forties and furious fifties – waters not yet tamed even by the most intrepid of explorers. Your expedition team will provide insights into your exciting adventure that lies ahead. During these two days on the sea, you will have plenty of time to gaze out at the Southern Ocean, capture photos of the birds circling the Ocean Endeavour and get to know your fellow travellers and expedition team. There is always great excitement on board when the first sighting of land appears, which with favourable sea and weather conditions will be early evening on day four.

There may even be opportunities to day-paddle, snowshoe and learn more about photography with your talented expedition photographer capturing the moments as they unfold.

Antarctica will enchant you with its incredible scenery, from imposing glaciers to towering snow-capped peaks, vast icebergs and ice strewn channels. Not to mention the wildlife – from extensive colonies of chinstrap, gentoo and Adelie penguins, to crabeater, Weddell, fur and elephant seals and a plethora of fascinating birds. The Antarctic Peninsula is known for a high number of wildlife sightings in front of stunning backdrops of mountains, ice and water, which combine to provide incredible scenes as we look for whales migrating along the coast. The peak of the migration season (February and March) is the best opportunity to see these majestic ocean dwellers, and the most common species found in the region are humpback, minke and fin whales, as well as orcas (technically a type of dolphin). Sightings can happen from the deck of the ship or during a Zodiac excursion.

You arrive in the port of Ushuaia in the morning and your expedition team will gather on the deck to farewell you as you disembark the Ocean Endeavour after breakfast. A transfer will take you to Ushuaia airport to make your flight to Buenos Aires. 

Founded in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza, Buenos Aires has grown to be the cultural and economic centre of Argentina and is home to some of the most beautiful architecture on the continent.This afternoon, you can easily explore downtown on foot from your centrally located hotel, which is located close to Plaza de la Republica.

After breakfast, your journey across South America and Antarctica comes to an end as you commence your onward travel arrangements.
