These drives are an integral part of the experience, offering breathtaking views of Balkan landscapes and stops at hidden gems along the way. Comfort breaks and opportunities to explore local spots are planned throughout.

Visas & Entry Requirements
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your tour and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your tour. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the visa entry requirements for your nationality via our page here: https://inspiringvacations-8357211.hs-sites.com/visa-information

You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.

We need your passport information to get everything ready for your tour so the information on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended on all our tours. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. It is also important to consider forced pre-tour cancellations and how your chosen insurance policy may cover such circumstances, so please keep this in mind when choosing your provider.

We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international tours, you will be asked by your tour leader for your travel insurance details if they were not already added to your Traveller Hub account pre-departure.

If you have credit card insurance your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide may require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details before arriving in-country.

Before you depart, you will be asked to submit your Travel Insurance details through the booking holder's Traveller Hub account through the Inspiring Vacations website. This is to ensure that we have this information readily available should we ever need it.

Please note that in the assessment of our Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a tour without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell before travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements and we would be more than happy to assist you.

We want to ensure everyone has a fantastic and inclusive experience on our tours. If you require the use of a mobility aid, such as a cane, walker, or wheelchair, please disclose this information at the time of booking.

Open communication helps us ensure your tour is a perfect fit and it allows your local guide or tour leader to assist you where possible.

Information for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP machine, please let us know at the time of booking. Some portions of our itinerary, like overnight cruises or camping tours, may have limited access to power outlets. In such cases, we recommend travelling with portable battery packs.

Certain activities, like overnight journeys on board smaller vessels, may not be suitable for CPAP use due to space limitations or noise concerns. We can discuss these potential limitations upfront and help you make informed decisions about your tour.

Please ensure that you check the voltage used throughout the countries you are travelling to and if it will be compatible with your machines. For example, Japan runs on 100 volts vs Australia at 220-240 volts, meaning a voltage converter might be required.

Starting Point
Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary.  Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.

Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary.  The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.

Arrival Details
Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are arriving as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your arrangements to the starting hotel.

Where the service remains included, on arrival look out for a representative holding a sign with your name after you have collected your baggage and exited customs. If you cannot find them, try to avoid wandering around and instead stay in one place and call the emergency contact number on your documentation.

Where the service has been forfeited due to an early arrival and extended stay, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub.  We recommend you wait until you receive your final documentation to book transfers as your start and end hotels will only be confirmed at this point. Please note that if you are choosing to book an independent airport transfer service, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise, nor can they resolve any concerns that you may have with your transfer service.

To make your way to your hotel from the airport, there are various connections by train or limousine bus. The airport information desks can provide helpful advice, too. Most destinations offer ride-share services, such as Uber or Didi.

Travelling in a group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your grouppatience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group.

We kindly ask that when you are requested to be at a place at a certain time that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip before departure.

Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.

Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.

If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.

Connect with fellow travellers on Facebook
During your booking journey, you might have received an email inviting you to join a special Facebook group. This vibrant online community is exclusively for Inspiring Vacations travellers wanting to connect, share, and inspire one another. Joining this group unlocks a wealth of information and connections. Swap travel tips, chat with other members who have been where you’re going, and even meet others interested in travelling together for your next adventure.

We also regularly host insightful webinars featuring travel experts who share their tips and tricks for navigating your destination and maximising your itinerary. Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to connect, learn, and get even more excited about your upcoming tour!

Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs. Local Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire tour, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.

Coach Transportation
The size of your coach will comfortably accommodate your group. There's usually room for some extra seats, ensuring a relaxing journey. Your luggage will be safely stored either underneath the coach or in a dedicated trailer.

While the exact coach style may vary depending on the departure, all our coaches offer comfortable seating. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets might not always be available. To stay connected and avoid dead batteries,  we recommend fully charging your devices beforehand or bringing a portable charger.

For longer journeys, we'll make sure to include ample restroom breaks along the way, so you can freshen up and recharge at your convenience, as facilities are not on-board the coach.

Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.

This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your tour! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.

Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure.

We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.

Getting Around
This tour covers Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Albania, and Bulgaria using a private coach. All coach journeys are designed with comfort in mind, and regular stops are scheduled along the way to allow you to stretch your legs, use restroom facilities, and purchase refreshments. Lunch stops are generally planned at rest areas that can easily accommodate groups, ensuring a smooth and relaxed travel experience.

While traveling through historic towns and UNESCO World Heritage sites, some areas are only accessible on foot due to narrow streets and pedestrian zones. Please be prepared for moderate walking on cobblestone streets and occasional uphill paths.

Travel Times
While exploring the Balkans, some days will include longer drives as we journey through breathtaking landscapes and connect historic cities and picturesque towns. Although these travel days can sometimes feel lengthy, our comfortable private coach, stunning scenery, and scheduled breaks for refreshments and stretching will make the journey more enjoyable, ensuring you arrive ready to explore each new destination.

Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.

This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.

Accommodation Details
We have carefully selected 4–5-star hotels throughout the Balkans to ensure your comfort and enjoyment. Our accommodations are chosen for their quality and suitability for our style of travel. While most are centrally located or well-positioned for sightseeing, it's important to note that star ratings in the region may differ slightly from Western standards. This variation adds to the charm and authenticity of your experience, offering a genuine

Packing Essentials
What you’ll need to pack for your Balkans adventure will depend on the season you’re travelling and the variety of environments you’ll encounter—from historic cities and coastal towns to mountainous regions. We recommend packing as lightly as possible while ensuring you can carry and lift your luggage, including up and down stairs or short distances over uneven surfaces.

A lockable suitcase with wheels is ideal for this tour. While there are no internal flights, you may encounter narrow hotel entrances or cobblestone streets where you'll need to manage your own bags. Aim to keep your main luggage under 20kg, with 15kg being a practical target. A medium-sized backpack (around 45–50 litres) is also suitable. Don’t forget a small day bag to carry your daily essentials—like water, a jacket, your phone or camera—while exploring.

Clothing: Bring a combination of lightweight, breathable clothing for warm days, and some warmer layers for cooler mornings and evenings, especially in mountainous areas. Long sleeves and pants can also offer protection from insects and the sun.

Footwear: Comfortable closed-in walking shoes or sneakers are highly recommended. You’ll be doing a fair bit of walking on cobblestone streets, in old town centres, and potentially uneven terrain in more rural areas.

Sun Protection: Include a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself from strong sun, especially in summer months.

Warm & Wet Weather Gear: Some regions, especially in the mountains, can get chilly or experience sudden rain. A light waterproof jacket or packable umbrella is a great idea.

Medical Kit: Carry a small personal medical kit including items such as painkillers, Band-Aids, antihistamines, electrolytes, and any necessary prescription medications. Insect repellent is also recommended.

Water Bottle: Bring a reusable water bottle (at least 1.5 litres) to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.

Electronics & Adapters: Don’t forget your phone, camera, chargers, and any necessary power banks. For most Balkan countries, you’ll need a Type C or Type F power adapter (the standard two-round-pin European plug), which works with 220–240V voltage. A universal adapter with surge protection is a smart addition.

Comfort Items: Consider earplugs for hotel stays in central locations, a book or journal for downtime, and a playlist or downloaded entertainment for longer coach journeys.

Packing smart will help you enjoy this richly diverse region with ease and comfort!

Climate
The Balkans region spans several countries and landscapes, from coastal towns along the Adriatic to inland valleys and mountain ranges. As a result, the climate can vary widely depending on your location and the time of year.

Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–October) are generally mild and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). These are ideal times to travel, with fewer crowds and comfortable weather for sightseeing.

Summer (July–August) brings warmer conditions, especially in lowland and coastal areas, where temperatures can reach 30°C or higher (86°F+). Cities like Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Skopje can feel particularly hot and humid during this time, while mountainous areas tend to be cooler and more refreshing.

Evenings and higher-altitude destinations—like parts of Bosnia, Montenegro, or northern Albania—can get cool, even in warmer months, so packing a light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Rain is possible throughout the year, especially in the mountains and coastal areas, so a lightweight waterproof jacket or umbrella is a good addition to your packing list.

Weather can shift quickly in this region, so layering is key. Be prepared for both warm sunshine and the occasional cool breeze or rain shower as you move through this diverse and scenic part of Europe.

Currency and ATMs
As this tour takes you through a variety of Balkan countries, you'll encounter several different currencies along the way. While some countries use the Euro, others have their own national currencies, so it’s important to plan ahead for smooth spending.

Here’s a quick guide to the currencies used in each country on your trip:

  • Serbia – Serbian Dinar (RSD)
  • Croatia – Euro (EUR)
  • Montenegro – Euro (EUR)
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina – Convertible Mark (BAM)
  • North Macedonia – Macedonian Denar (MKD)
  • Albania – Albanian Lek (ALL)
  • Bulgaria – Bulgarian Lev (BGN)

ATMs are widely available in cities and towns throughout the Balkans, and they generally offer competitive exchange rates. Most major credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and larger shops. However, smaller businesses, market stalls, and rural areas may prefer or only accept cash.

We recommend withdrawing local currency upon arrival in each new country, rather than carrying large amounts of cash across borders. You’ll often get a better rate at ATMs than at currency exchange booths, especially those in tourist hotspots.

Tips for managing money on tour:

  • Notify your bank before departure to avoid any card security blocks while abroad.
  • Keep a small stash of Euros on hand, as they’re useful across borders and occasionally accepted in non-Euro countries.
  • Withdraw money in modest amounts, especially in countries where you'll only spend a short time.
  • Bring a backup card and keep it separate from your main wallet in case of loss or theft.
  • Some ATMs may offer to charge you in your home currency—always choose to be charged in the local currency for the best exchange rate.

Having a mix of cash, card, and a small amount of Euros will give you the most flexibility and peace of mind as you travel across this diverse and fascinating region.

Food and Allergies
Travelling through the Balkans offers an incredible opportunity to sample the diverse and hearty cuisines of Central and Southeastern Europe. Each country brings its own unique flavours and culinary traditions to the table. In Hungary, expect rich goulash, paprika-spiced stews, and sweet chimney cakes. Croatia offers coastal seafood dishes like black risotto and inland favourites such as peka (meat and vegetables slow-cooked under a bell). In Bosnia and Serbia, you'll find grilled meats like ćevapi, fresh breads, and comforting dishes like burek (savory filled pastry).

Montenegro blends Mediterranean and Balkan flavours with fresh seafood and robust meat dishes, while Romania and Bulgaria feature homestyle staples such as sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), mămăligă (cornmeal porridge), shopska salad, and hearty soups. Local cheeses, pastries, and fresh produce are common across the region.

While travelling with Inspiring Vacations, you’ll enjoy a combination of group meals and free time to explore local dining options on your own. This flexibility allows you to discover new favourites and experience the regional food culture in a way that suits your tastes.

If you have dietary requirements or food allergies, please inform our Customer Support Team prior to departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local guide will also do their best to help you navigate local menus and make suitable suggestions throughout the journey. That said, if you have a serious food allergy, it is ultimately your responsibility to double-check ingredients and avoid anything that may pose a risk.

The Balkans is a region of generous hospitality—don’t be surprised if meals are large, and if you're invited to try something new!

Local Customs
The Balkans is a culturally rich and diverse region, shaped by centuries of history, religious traditions, and unique national identities. While each country you’ll visit has its own customs and social etiquette, there are some shared values and behaviors that are good to keep in mind as a respectful traveller.

People in the Balkans are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Guests are often treated with great generosity—whether it’s being offered coffee, a shot of rakija (fruit brandy), or a homemade treat. It’s polite to accept such offers, even if just a small sip or bite, as it’s seen as a gesture of respect.

A handshake is the common greeting, sometimes accompanied by a kiss on both cheeks (especially among women or between friends). Eye contact is important and shows attentiveness and sincerity. Locals can be very direct in conversation, which might come across as blunt but is generally not meant to be rude.

When visiting Orthodox, Catholic, or Islamic religious sites (such as monasteries, mosques, or churches), modest clothing is expected. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and hats removed when entering. In some places, women may be asked to cover their heads—scarves are often available at entrances.

Dress Code
Casual, comfortable clothing is ideal for most days on tour, with sturdy walking shoes recommended for city strolls or uneven ground. Lightweight layers work well for warmer months, while a jacket or warmer layer is useful for cooler evenings or mountainous areas. For evenings out, smart-casual attire is suitable but not required.

When visiting religious sites such as churches, mosques, or monasteries, modest dress is expected—shoulders and knees should be covered, and women may be asked to cover their heads (carrying a scarf is helpful). While beachwear is perfect for coastal areas and pools, it’s respectful to cover up when away from the water, even in beach towns. In rural or more traditional regions, dressing conservatively is advised to respect local norms.

Tipping Your Leader
Tipping is not compulsory, but it is a meaningful way to show appreciation for the service and care provided by your Tour Leader and driver throughout your journey. If you feel they have gone above and beyond to make your experience enjoyable, a tip is a thoughtful gesture.

As a guideline, we recommend budgeting €4–6 per person, per day for your Tour Leader, and €2–3 per person, per day for your driver. Of course, the amount is entirely at your discretion and should reflect your satisfaction with the service received. Tipping is typically done in cash and handed directly to your Tour Leader and driver at the end of the tour.

Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice regarding safety issues when travelling internationally. We recommend checking your own government’s advice for the latest travel information before departure and ensuring your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities included in your trip.

The Balkans are generally safe for travellers, but it’s always important to exercise common-sense precautions, particularly in tourist areas. Be mindful of your belongings and avoid displaying valuables to reduce the risk of pickpocketing, especially in crowded places or busy markets. Stay aware of your surroundings and remain cautious of scams. When exploring cities or urban areas, use reputable transportation services and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas.

While your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local guide will accompany you on all included activities and provide support, you'll have free time to explore independently. Please be mindful that Inspiring Vacations cannot guarantee the safety of activities or operators outside the itinerary. Always use your judgement when selecting activities during your free time.

Your Tour Leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Your safety and well-being are our top priority, and we’ll always take appropriate measures to ensure a secure journey.

Apps to Download
Before your Balkans tour, consider downloading some helpful apps to enhance your experience. Google Translate is a great tool for overcoming language barriers, especially the lens function, which allows you to translate text on signs, menus, or product labels. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is also highly recommended for navigation, especially if you're without Wi-Fi.

For city navigation, Maps.me provides offline maps that are useful in most cities across the region. If you need transportation services, Bolt is popular in countries like Serbia, Croatia, and Romania, while Uber is widely used in Bulgaria and Romania. For local taxis in cities, check if the country you’re visiting has a local app—CarGo is popular in Serbia, and Taxi.bg is frequently used in Bulgaria.

We also recommend downloading WhatsApp before you leave, as it’s a convenient way to stay in touch with your tour group and communicate with your tour leader. They will generally share updates and information about the schedule in advance via this app.

Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.

Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth trip survey. Your tour leader or local guide may also provide you with a QR code that you can scan using your device to access our survey straight away. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your trip has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.

Finishing Point
Your finishing hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book additional post-tour accommodation, please do so once you have the final hotel list. We recommend booking a flexible rate that can be changed or cancelled without penalty should there be any unforeseen changes to your booking.

Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.

Departure Details
Airport transfers are included as part of your package, so long as you are departing as per the purchased itinerary. If you have purchased an extension, either pre or post-tour, the applicable transfer service will be forfeited from your package and you will need to make your arrangements to the starting hotel.

Where the service remains included, your tour leader will confirm the pick-up time from your hotel to the airport and this will depend on the flight that you have booked. Generally, you will be required to be at the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled departure.

Where the service has been forfeited due to an extended stay, we do offer airport transfers at an additional cost which can be booked via your Traveller Hub.

If you're having any problems, you can speak to hotel reception before your departure.

This is a land only package.

This package does not include international airfares. If you would like to add airfares to your booking our flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub. The flight portal will allow you to search for all available airfares to your destination. The function works like most general flight search engines allowing you to select your preferred airline, book different cabin classes (eg. Business class) and view flight durations and transit times to your destination.

The flight portal will be available via your Traveller Hub once the following criteria has been met:
