Salaam Alaikum! Welcome to Egypt.
A buzzing metropolis, home to at least 19 million people, Cairo gives you a great feel for Egyptian streetlife. It’s busy – almost frantic – and among the hustle and bustle, it’s an exciting blend of old world and new. Arabs call this city Umm al-Dunya (the mother of the world). There are many beautiful mosques to visit, like the Mohammed Ali Mosque in the Citadel. Or head to the oldest part of Cairo, the Babylon Fortress, to see ancient ruins. For stunning panoramic views of the capital, go up the 187-metre-high Cairo Tower.
Try some street food – lamb shawarma, anyone? – or get a taste of Egyptian street life by visiting a cafe. Sit in an ahwa and sip traditional mint tea. The shisha pipe can be found in many ahwas and restaurants across Cairo.
Arrival airport transfers are included as part of your package. You will be met upon arrival at the airport by a representative who will escort you through immigration, and transferred to your hotel.
If Inspiring Vacations has not provided your international airfares, please ensure you provide your flight details via your Traveller Hub portal no later than 90 days prior to travel so that your transfers can be confirmed.
Please note: if you are arriving early and have made your own arrangements prior to your tour commencing, airport transfers will not be included. However, if you are purchasing pre-nights accommodation as part of your Inspiring Vacations package, airport transfers will still be provided to the starting hotel.
This morning, meet your guide and head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore these structures that have stood tall for some 4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.
Afterwards, we visit the the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is one of the world’s most renowned museums, housing the largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. Located in Tahrir Square, the museum was established in 1902 and features over 120,000 items, including the treasures of Tutankhamun, royal mummies, and intricately carved statues. Its vast halls showcase the grandeur and complexity of ancient Egyptian civilization, offering visitors a journey through thousands of years of history, art, and culture.
Today, enjoy a free day at leisure.
Later this afternoon you'll be transferred to the airport to board your included flight to Luxor.
Special Information

From backstreet bazaars to minaret-topped mosques, and neighbourhood coffee houses, these are the places that make Egypt's sprawling capital what it is. We will visit Sultan Hassan mosque and Madrasa, the finest piece of early Mamluk architecture in Cairo. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan then we will enjoy a walk in Moez street starting form Bab el Fetouh and we will end our Adventure in Khan El Khalili Bazaar. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan el-Khalili is one of the world’s largest bazaars and offers a truly authentic local Cairo experience.
Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years and was once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.
Then it’s time to embark on your luxury Nile cruise that will be home for the next 4 nights. You’ll cruise between Luxor and Aswan on this elegant ship, with all the comforts you would expect from a 5-star floating hotel.
Please note that since the sailing distance between Luxor and Aswan is approximately 200kms, that it is typical for all cruises operated along the Nile to be docked for majority of the time to conduct sightseeing, with the sailing to occur of an evening. The vessel will be docked either in Luxor or Aswan. Depending on the time of year and number of vessels operating at the same time, you will also find that all vessels are docked beside one another, which is beyond our control.
To ensure that our customers have appropriate expectations prior to their journey, it is important not to compare this experience to that of a European River Cruise, which tend to cover a greater distance and on larger vessels. Instead, you will experience a Deluxe stay on-board your vessel, offering a great chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the banks of the Nile while you sit back and relax. Your cruise schedule will be provided once on-board.
Situated on the East Bank of the Nile River, in the city of Luxor, Luxor Temple was built approximately 1400 BC. The site is over 73 sq km and exhibits obelisks, giant statues, an Avenue of Sphinx statues, the Grand colonnade and the Barque Shrine of Theban Triad. Viewing is as majestic at night as it is during the day.
Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.
Start: 4:00pm
End: 6:00pm
Inclusions: return transfers to temple, entrance into Luxor Temple
Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of an impressive colonnade.
Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombs of more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of and legends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.
After paying a visit to three of the most interesting royal tombs we'll continue to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building of sharp lines that contrasts beautifully against the craggy high cliffs behind it, creating a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, this temple was built to prove her importance among the ancestors.
Enjoy lunch upon your return to the boat. There is time to relax on deck, or in your cabin, before we set sail for Edfu. Generally the journey from Luxor to Edfu takes place between 1pm an 11 pm, though the departure time may vary, depending on river traffic. En route to Edfu we pass through the Esna Lock and head upstream.
Special Information
Please note: Entry to the Tomb of King Tutankhamun is not included in today’s scheduled activities. Tickets cost approximately USD $20 and can be purchased on-site with assistance from your trip leader. Be aware that there may be long queues, so plan accordingly to allow enough time for your visit.
Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and a bazaar.
Later we'll return to the boat where we’ll continue travelling upriver, with plenty of free time for relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the desert hills that frame the lush riverbanks.
This afternoon we'll arrive at Kom Ombo Temple. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometres north of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the double temple are a magnificent sight to behold as you arrive from the river.
Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carved reliefs give a sense of this area's prominence as capital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile meant it was once one of Upper Egypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda, and you'll get a sense of this rich history for yourself.
Return to the cruise boat where you’ll continue travelling upriver towards Aswan.
Please note: the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horses and carriages. As a business that seeks to promote responsible travel, animal welfare is extremely important to us at Inspiring Vacations, and unfortunately, some operators of the horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for this reason we do not include the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you and your guide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.
Today you will awake before sunrise for an early morning start. Sit back and relax as you drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. You will have an early arrival into Abu Simbel to view one of the most incredible sights you will see. The two enormous sandstone structures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to serve as lasting monuments to himself and his favourite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on its façade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.
Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higher ground, where they are seen today.
On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.
This afternoon, we'll enjoy a sailboat ride around the Nile River islands in a traditional felucca (a small, traditional Egyptian sailboat).
Philae Temple is situated on an island just south of Aswan. It was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. The temple is dedicated to Isis - the goddess of healing, magic and birth, her husband Osiris and their son Horus.
Take a 20-minute drive from Aswan to the dock, where you will embark on a 20-minute boat ride to Agilkia Island, where the Philae Temple complex is located. You will have approximately 2 hours exploring the island and temple before returning to Aswan by boat and road vehicle.
Start: pending Cairo to Aswan flight
Duration: 3 hours
Inclusions: return transportation (boat and road vehicle) from Aswan to Agilkia Island, entrance into Philae Temple complex

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre, locally known as The Giraffe Centre, is crucial for conserving the critically endangered Rothschild giraffe, which is distinct from other subspecies due to the lack of patterning below the knees.
Their numbers plummeted due to habitat loss and extensive hunting; at one point, only about 100 Rothschild's giraffes were left in the wild. Founded in 1979 by Betty and Jock Leslie Melville, who raised a Rothschild giraffe named Daisy in their Langata home, the Centre has successfully increased the population to around 300 across Kenya through dedicated conservation efforts.
Visitors can enjoy an up-close experience by feeding the giraffes from a raised wooden platform designed to their height. You may also spot warthogs scavenging beneath the giraffes for fallen pellets. After your visit, relax with a pot of tea in the tea house or browse for souvenirs at the Daisy Zoovenir Shop. Notably, 90% of the Centre's funding comes from entrance fees, the gift shop, and the tea house.
Once you’ve finished with the giraffes, take a self-guided walk on the 1.5 km trail in the nearby Gogo River Sanctuary, where you can enjoy stunning views of Nairobi and the Ngong Hills.

Starting Point
Your starting hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book pre-tour accommodation independently, we suggest you do this only once you have received your final hotel list for your tour. If you would like to book something sooner, we recommend that you book using a flexible rate that can be cancelled through your chosen third-party provider without penalty.
Travellers will arrive at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. If arriving before standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm, you are welcome to leave your luggage at hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.
Note: if you need to apply for a tourist visa before departure, we recommend using the details of the suggested hotel on the tour itinerary if you wish to fulfil this before the release of your final tour documentation. Please refer to our visa section for more information on whether or not a visa is required for your destination.
Arrival Details
Arrival airport transfers are included as part of your package. You will be met upon arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Look out for a representative holding a sign with your name on it, after you have collected your baggage and exited customs. If you cannot find them, try to avoid wandering around and instead stay in one place and call the emergency contact number on your documentation.
Welcome Meeting Instructions
On the morning of day 2, meet your tour guide and fellow travellers before heading out to see the Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx.
You are welcome to arrive at any time on Day 1 of your tour and the day is at your leisure. Upon checking in at the hotel, you will receive a letter containing meeting instructions for the following morning. If you do not automatically receive these details, please ask for them. Generally, you must meet at the lobby the following morning (on the day that sightseeing commences) as early as 0815 am local time. Please ensure that you are on time.
In Case of Emergency
Although we strive to deliver exceptional holiday experiences, unforeseen circumstances can occasionally arise during travel. If any issues arise during your tour, it's essential to promptly communicate them to your tour leader or local representative. This ensures they can take immediate action to address the problem and mitigate any negative impact on the remainder of your journey.
We understand that there may be instances where your tour leader or local representative is unable to resolve a situation to your satisfaction. In such cases, we encourage you to request that the tour leader or local representative escalate the matter to their direct manager for further assistance.
You also have the option to share details in your online feedback after the tour. However, please keep in mind that it's challenging for us to offer practical assistance once the tour is completed. Therefore, notifying us while still travelling allows us the chance to address the issue in real-time and provide a timely resolution.
For general contact details please visit the Contact Us page on our website.
When your final tour documentation is released, this will include an emergency contact for our local travel partner while you are on tour. If this is not included in your documentation, you will receive this on arrival during your welcome meeting.

Travelling in a group
Travelling in a group means you will experience both the pleasures and perhaps at times, some of the frustrations of travelling with people you don’t know. The good news is you all have at least one thing in common: a love of travel and exploration. Your fellow travellers will probably come from different parts of the world, and fall into different age groups. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group—patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the overall benefit of the group.
We kindly ask that you are requested to be at a place at a certain time that you respect this request from your tour leader or local guide. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your tour before departure.
Community Guidelines
Inspiring Vacations does not tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams (Inspiring Vacations Tour Leaders and local expert guides) or local communities.
Any behaviour that prevents your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines, may result in Inspiring Vacations removing you from the tour.
If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader immediately. Alternatively, when you are on-tour and require immediate support you can contact our Customer Support team and select the “On-Tour” option when listening to the options.
Safari Etiquette and Safety
Public Game Reserves & National Parks
Southern and East Africa’s public game reserves and national reserves offer some of the world’s best wildlife viewing across diverse landscapes, from open savannas to dense woodlands and wetlands. Iconic parks like the Serengeti, Kruger, Maasai Mara and Etosha are home to the Big Five, while Chobe, Hwange and Amboseli are renowned for their elephant herds.
Travallers should expect seasonal crowds in popular parks, with peak times leading to busy wildlife sightings. Unlike private reserves, public parks have set opening and closing hours, limiting night drives and off-road exploration. Road conditions vary, with some areas featuring rough, unpaved tracks, particularly in remote regions. Facilities range from well-equipped visitor centers to more basic amenities in less developed parks.
Despite these challenges, public reserves play a crucial role in conservation and offer unforgettable safari experiences with responsible tourism practices
Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader vs. Local Guide
While both tour leaders and local guides enrich your travel experience, their roles differ. Tour leaders, who often accompany you for the entire tour, handle logistics, ensure smooth sailing of the itinerary, and act as your point of contact for any concerns. They might provide general information about destinations, but in-depth historical or cultural knowledge often comes from local guides. Local guides, frequently native to the area, lead tours at specific sites or attractions, offering a deeper understanding of the local history, art, or way of life.
4WD Transportation
Safari vehicles in Southern and East Africa are specially designed 4WDs built for both comfort and durability on rugged terrain. They provide space for passengers and a small soft bag of luggage, ensuring a relaxed journey even on longer drives. Luggage is securely stored in the rear or on a roof rack, keeping it safe throughout your adventure.
The specific type of 4WD may vary depending on availability, but all vehicles are equipped with comfortable seating and built to handle diverse landscapes. Keep in mind that Wi-Fi and charging outlets are generally not available onboard. For longer drives, enclosed 4WD vehicles are typically used, offering protection from dust and the elements while ensuring a smooth ride where possible. Regular stops at scenic viewpoints or rest areas allow you to stretch, enjoy the surroundings, and refresh as needed.
On safari days, open-sided 4WDs are commonly used to maximise wildlife viewing opportunities, offering unobstructed views and an immersive experience in the African wilderness. Expect smooth cruising on paved roads, but be prepared for some bumpy sections on gravel tracks and dirt trails—part of the adventure of exploring these remote and beautiful landscapes!
Itinerary Changes
Sometimes, unexpected things can happen, like unpredictable weather or higher-than-usual crowds at attractions. In these situations, your tour leader might need to adjust the itinerary slightly to improve your overall experience.
This flexibility ensures you get the most out of your tour! Your tour leader will always keep you informed of any changes and explain the reasoning behind them. Remember, when travelling with a group, sometimes going with the flow can lead to even more amazing experiences.
Staying Connected
If you want to stay connected and access reliable internet while on tour, there are a few options available. It is possible to purchase a virtual sim and we recommend contacting your mobile phone provider for assistance in doing so. You can add a roaming data plan to your existing phone contract is another option, albeit an expensive one. You will need to arrange this before departure. Purchasing a local SIM at the airport is the final option. For a prepaid fee, you can get data by simply swapping your current SIM with your new SIM and depending on which package you purchase, you’ll be able to text and make phone calls, just as you would at home.
We also recommend downloading WhatsApp and using this to communicate with other group members while on tour, and of course, after the tour if you’d like to stay in touch. Our tour leaders may also use this as a means of communicating essential tour information with you, as well as if you choose to add-on transfers to your booking, as your driver may use this to confirm arrangements with you.
Travelling in Egypt
This tour will use a private coach, internal Domestic flights, and cruise. For coach journeys, where applicable there will be comfort stops along the way where you can freshen up, stretch your legs, use the bathroom and often, purchase refreshments. Generally, lunch stops will be taken at rest stops as they can easily accommodate our large groups.
Your flight between Cairo and Nairobi will be unescorted.
For further information on your cruise, please see Cruise Details above.

Long driving days and early starts are scheduled to optimise travel time, ensure prime wildlife viewing opportunities, and minimise traffic delays. Hotel Ratings
Star ratings can differ between countries, reflecting diverse standards and amenities. To give you the most accurate picture possible, we don't just rely on a single source for hotel ratings. We go beyond by researching various trusted travel websites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com. This allows us to analyse a wider range of genuine customer reviews and experiences, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the hotel's typical star rating.
This means you can book with confidence, knowing the hotel has a strong track record of satisfied guests.
Accommodation Details
This tour features a curated selection of 4 and 5 star hotels, lodges, chalets and safari camps, all with private ensuite facilities throughout. Each accommodation has been carefully chosen based on a stringent set of criteria, ensuring the high standards of comfort and convenience. Accommodation in Africa can differ from what you might be used to at home, but rest assured, we carefully select options to ensure your stay is both comfortable and enjoyable.
Lodges and safari camps offer a comfortable yet authentic wilderness experience and a unique setting. Expect cosy, well-appointed accommodations, often in the form of permanent tents or chalets with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Many lodges feature communal dining areas, lounges, and fire pits where guests can relax after game drives. Meals are typically included and range from hearty home-style cooking to buffet-style spreads, with vegetarian options available. While some camps have electricity and limited Wi-Fi, others rely on solar power, making for a more off-grid experience. Game drives are often shared with other guests and led by knowledgeable guides, offering excellent wildlife viewing. Warm hospitality and a focus on sustainability ensure a memorable and responsible safari adventure.
Luggage Requirements
Due to limited storage capacity of your safari vehicle, we ask that luggage is kept to a manageable amount in a small soft bag – 15kg (33 pounds) max. Hard suitcases are not suitable. It is also recommended to bring a day pack for use throughout the day. Where you are starting and returning from the same city any hard suitcases and excess luggage may be stored at your hotel.
Packing Essentials
What you need to pack for your tour will vary according to the tour style you have chosen, the countries you are visiting and when you are travelling. We recommend you pack as lightly as possible, ensuring that you can carry and lift your luggage, and walk with it for short distances or up or down a flight of stairs.
Clothing: Packing appropriately for varying conditions, including lightweight clothing for the day, warm layers for cooler nights, and rain gear for unexpected showers. Long sleeves and pants are beneficial for mosquito protection. Choose clothes that are easy to wash and dry as laundry facilities will be available. Neutral colours are suggested for safari days and wildlife spotting.
Footwear: Closed-in shoes or boots are recommended to protect your feet from injuries and potential bites or stings, whether you're walking in urban areas or through nature.
Sun Protection: Bring a wide brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun.
Warm Gear: It can get cold at night and on early morning game drives. A light, warm waterproof jacket is advisable.
Medical Kit: It's good to carry personal items like mild painkillers, electrolytes, Band-Aids, and insect repellent. Ensure you are travelling with any prescription medication that you may need.
Water Bottle: A capacity of at least 1.5 litres is recommended to reduce the environmental impact of bottled water.
Camera/Phone/Binoculars: Don’t forget to bring something to capture memories and for wildlife spotting.
Comfort Items: Earplugs can help with noisy environments, a good book or journal for downtime, and a music player for entertainment.
Swimwear - many hotels and lodges have swimming pools
Climate
Egypt has a mostly desert climate, with hot, dry days and cooler nights. Summers (May to September) can be extremely hot, especially in southern areas like Aswan and Luxor, where temperatures often exceed 40°C. Winters (November to February) are mild and pleasant, with daytime temperatures averaging around 20–25°C, though evenings can be chilly, particularly in the desert and on Nile cruises. Rain is rare but possible along the Mediterranean coast and in Cairo during winter. Sun protection is essential year-round, and it’s a good idea to pack layers to adapt to shifting temperatures between day and night.
Click HERE for more information on weather in Egypt.
Travelling through East Africa provides a predominantly tropical climate but temperatures and weather patterns vary depending on altitude and proximity to the coast. It typically has two rainy seasons: the “long rains” from March to May and the “short rains” from October to December. The best time to visit for wildlife viewing, including the Great Migration in the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, is during the dry seasons from June to October and January to February. However, the lush landscapes during the rainy seasons also offer unique scenic beauty and fewer tourists.
Kenya’s climate ranges from tropical along the coast to temperate in the highlands and arid in the northern regions. Summers (November to March) are warm, with temperatures averaging between 25°C (77°F) and 30°C (86°F), and occasional short rains. Winters (June to August) are mild and dry, with cooler temperatures in the highlands, especially during the evenings and early mornings.
Tanzania’s climate varies from tropical along the coast and on the islands to temperate in the highlands and arid in the central regions. Summers (November to March) are warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 32°C (90°F), accompanied by occasional short rains. Winters (June to August) are cooler and drier, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler evenings, especially in the highland areas around Arusha and Ngorongoro.
Currency and ATMs
The local currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Cash is widely used, especially in markets, smaller shops, and rural areas, so it’s a good idea to carry some small notes for tips and everyday purchases.
ATMs are common in cities, tourist areas, and airports, and usually offer good exchange rates. That said, machines can occasionally be out of service or run out of cash — especially in smaller towns — so don’t rely on them entirely. Credit and debit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, but not everywhere. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted.
Generally for travel throughout Eastern Arica it is recommended to have local currency to use for smaller purchases and in more remote areas where credit cards may not be accepted. USD and credit cards are widely accepted in tourist shops and some restaurants across Africa, with Visa and Mastercard being preferred over American Express and Diners. Smaller venues and more remote areas often only take cash. Foreign currency can be easily exchanged at bureaus, which generally offer the best rates. Your tour guide can advise you where and when to exchange or withdraw cash for overland trips.
ATMs are increasingly available in major towns, cities, and even some campsites, making credit or debit cards a convenient way to access money. Be aware that withdrawal limits may vary by country and can be as low as USD 100 per day. Cards with the Visa logo are most widely recognized, though MasterCard is also accepted in most places. Be aware that your home bank and the ATM operator may charge you fees for international withdrawals. Check with your bank before your tour to understand their foreign transaction fees.
Note that many businesses and banks in Africa, especially East Africa, do not accept US dollar notes older than 2013. When exchanging USD into local currency, use medium to large bills ($20, $50, $100) in good condition from the 2013 series onwards. Avoid bringing torn, marked, or damaged bills, as they may be rejected.
The national currency of Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US dollars and Euros are also widely accepted at lodges, hotels, and major tourist establishments.
In Tanzania the currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Cash is widely used, especially outside major cities. ATMs are available in urban areas, but they may not always be reliable, so carrying some cash is recommended. Credit cards are accepted at high-end hotels and restaurants in cities but are not widely used elsewhere.
Food and Allergies
While travelling with Inspiring Vacations you'll enjoy iconic sightseeing, as well as experience the vast array of culinary offerings in Africa.
Travelling in Egypt offers a delicious journey through bold, hearty, and fragrant flavours. Feast on koshari, a popular street food made from rice, lentils, pasta, and crispy onions, or try ful medames, a savoury fava bean dish often eaten for breakfast. Grilled meats, like kofta and kebab, are staples, while molokhia, a green soup made from jute leaves, offers something more local and traditional. Sweet treats include basbousa (semolina cake) and baklava, often served with strong, sugary Egyptian tea or a small cup of Arabic coffee. Egypt’s food reflects its long history and cultural mix, simple, satisfying, and full of flavour.
Southern and East African cuisine blends indigenous traditions, colonial influences, and global flavors. Restaurants and lodges primarily serve Western-style dishes and will make every effort to accommodate dietary requirements, ensuring a comfortable and enriching dining experience throughout your journey.
While many meals will be eaten together with your group, not all meals are included in your tour which gives you maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let our Customer Support Team know before departure. Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will also be able to give suggestions on which restaurants to try during your trip. For those with a particular food allergy, your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader will endeavour to advise the main ingredients in the dishes consumed. It is, however, still your responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any problematic ingredients.
Local Customs
Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country where traditions are shaped by religion, hospitality, and social respect. Modest dress is appreciated, particularly when visiting mosques or rural areas — it’s best to cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering religious sites. A friendly greeting in Arabic, like salaam alaikum (peace be upon you), is often met with a warm smile.
In markets and tourist areas, you may encounter very persistent sellers, haggling is common, and it’s okay to politely decline and walk away if you're not interested. While the sales approach can feel forceful at times, staying calm and firm is usually the best way to handle it.
Understanding local customs in Eastern Africa enhances your travel experience. It’s important to respect elders and ask permission before taking photos. Always ask before entering someone's home or sacred sites, dress modestly in rural areas, and be mindful of local sensitivities and customs. Showing respect fosters positive interactions and enriches your journey in these diverse and welcoming cultures.
Dress Code
When travelling in Egypt, it’s best to dress modestly, especially in rural areas and at religious sites. Both men and women should aim to cover shoulders and knees. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing is ideal, it keeps you cool in the heat while also respecting local customs.
Women don’t need to wear a headscarf unless entering a mosque, where covering the head, shoulders and legs is expected. Men should also avoid wearing shorts in mosques.
Swimwear is fine at hotel pools or resort areas like the Red Sea, but not appropriate elsewhere. Dressing respectfully not only shows cultural awareness, but can also help avoid unwanted attention and allow for more comfortable local interactions.
In East Africa, casual and comfortable clothing is generally appropriate. For cities and towns, jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and casual dresses are suitable, with smart casual attire recommended for upscale venues. In rural and conservative areas, dress modestly to show respect.
For safari trips, opt for neutral colours like khaki, brown, green, and beige to blend in with the environment and avoid attracting insects. Layering is key due to temperature fluctuations, with mornings and evenings being chilly and afternoons hot. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or boots are essential. Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants are ideal for sun and insect protection, and a lightweight, waterproof jacket may be needed in the rainy season.
Responsible Dining
Avoid consuming endangered species or items harvested unsustainably. Bring your own reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. Be respectful of local customs and food practices, and always tip fairly to support local workers. Responsible dining helps protect the environment and promotes the well-being of local communities.
Tipping Your Leader
Tipping is not included in your package and is not compulsory, but it is a common practice and a meaningful way to show appreciation to those working in the tourism industry. If you feel your guide, driver, or other service providers have delivered excellent service, a gratuity is always appreciated.
At the start of your tour, your guide will collect a tipping kitty, which is used to tip hotel staff, porters, restaurant staff, and other support services throughout your journey. We recommend USD$5 per person per day for this kitty. Please note this amount is not for your guide personally — it simply allows them to manage tipping for the wider team on your behalf. If you choose not to contribute, the guide will need to cover these tips out of their own pocket.
Tipping for your guide will be collected separately at the end of their services. A suggested amount is USD$6–8 per person per day, depending on the level of service received. For your driver, we recommend USD$3 per person per day. These amounts can be paid in local currency or USD, depending on your preference.
These figures are intended as a guide only, based on local norms and feedback from our on-ground partners. Ultimately, tipping is at your discretion and should reflect your personal experience.
Peak Travel Times
The most popular time to visit Egypt is from October to April, when the weather is milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. This is considered the peak season, especially around December and January, when major sites can be busy and prices may rise.
Summer (June to August) sees far fewer tourists due to the intense heat, particularly in the south. However, this can be a good time to visit if you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind high temperatures.
Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, is observed across the country, and dates change each year. Travelling during Ramadan offers a unique cultural experience, but it may also mean shorter hours at some attractions and limited food service during daylight hours.
Planning your visit around Egypt’s seasons can help you balance comfort, crowds, and cultural experiences.
In East Africa, the Serengeti and Maasai Mara experience high visitor numbers between June and September, coinciding with the peak season for the Great Migration. During this time, a high concentration of safari vehicles can be expected on game drives and throughout the reserves.
Safety and Security
Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your own government's advice for the most up-to-date travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your tour.
Your Inspiring Vacations Tour Leader or local representative will accompany you on all included activities listed on the itinerary, however, you'll have some free time to explore on your own. While your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide will assist you as best they can with your requests and the options available outside your itinerary, please note Inspiring Vacations makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running the activity. Please use your judgement when selecting an activity in your free time.
Please also note that your Inspiring Vacations tour leader or local guide has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
Apps to Download
Some useful apps you may want to consider downloading before your tour include Google Translate, the lens function is especially useful when wanting to read product labels, signs, and menus. Google Maps with offline maps downloaded is great for easy navigation without being reliant on wifi.
The Uber ride share app is widely used in South Africa and in major cities in Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Uganda. Another rideshare app widely used in Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Zimbabwe is InDrive and it is often available where Uber is not.
Post-Tour Feedback
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a link to a post-purchase survey, which is your opportunity to share your feedback with us on your booking experience and interactions with our Sales and Customer Success teams. This feedback is invaluable to ensure that we are servicing our customers to the best of our ability.
Furthermore, towards the end of your travels and while you are in your destination, you will receive an email from us with a link to an in-depth tour survey. It is very important to us that we hear from our customers to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed customers' expectations, so this will be your opportunity to let us know how your tour has been, what has worked well and potentially what could be improved.
Finishing Point
Your finishing hotel may differ from the original itinerary. Please refer to your final documentation which will be provided approximately 14-30 days before departure for your confirmed hotel list. If you need to book additional post-tour accommodation, please do so once you have the final hotel list. We recommend booking a flexible rate that can be changed or cancelled without penalty should there be any unforeseen changes to your booking.
Travellers will depart at various times throughout the day depending on flights booked. Check-out time is generally from 10am-12pm. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. This service is subject to availability and will likely come at an additional cost payable directly.
